DIY - Sunglass holder (replaces ashtray)

I installed the sunglass holder ( part #51-16-7-132-376 about $20) last night and it took about 20 minutes including taking the pictures. Steps might be a little different for cars with an automatic transmission.

1) Remove the shift boot using your hand and carefully pulling up on the edge of the boot.
2) Move the gear shift into 2nd gear to make it easer to remove the center console trim cover.
3) Open the console storage compartment lid.
4) Pull up with a steady firm grip on the rear part of the shift boot opening to remove center console cover.
5) Disconnect the lighter plug.
6) Pull the center console cover over the shift boot to gain access to the underside.
7) Remove the 4 T-20 torx screws that hold the ashtray assembly.
8) Use a small screwdriver to pop off the aluminum/wood trim from the ashtray cover.
9) Install trim on new sunglass holder lid.
10) Attach sunglass holder to the center console cover.
11) Reinstall center console cover. It just snaps back into place.

Thanks to Tierfreund for info on how to remove the center console trim cove

How is the trim kept in place? Is it glued on or is it wedged in with tabs or something?

It's held on with tabs, it came off very easily for me.

Very good. I ordered a holder from Pacific BMW today, so I will be giving it a shot later. I mainly want the area for mounting a display I mentioned a while back, but I am still wondering about the dimensions of the tray.

Too much work for the fricking sunglasses. I just put it in the damn central storage, and keep my ashtray to store coins.

How much shipped from pacific?

This is nice. I hate reaching under my elbow to grab my glasses, and I'll gladly pay 20 bucks for a trimed piece to hold them. It just has to wait until I hardware my V1.

Can someone grab some quick dimensions? Maby e a ruler and a camera will do, just hold and click...

I paid around $32. I am not impressed with Pacific. I was supposed to have the holder by Nov 19th. However, I called them the last three days and I had to leave a message with someone each time.

Since no one returned my calls, I called them today and had the receptionist connect me to a person instead of a machine. After 40 minutes of being cycled through voice mails and option menus, I finally talked to someone. They said they will send the holder out today. I am supposed to get a tracking number via email, but for some reason, I get the feeling I will be on the phone with them again.

Well, they actually sent it out after I talked to the manager. They even sent a tracking number. I will measure it when it arrives. It should be here by the 6th.
