All Dreamliners Grounded World-Wide

LOT Polish Airlines Voluntarily Grounds Dreamliner Flights
by Jonathan Spira

Quote:
CHICAGO—Following a move by the Federal Aviation Administration, which ordered an immediate halt to Boeing Dreamliner flights by U.S. airlines, LOT Polish Airlines announced it was cancelling its inaugural Dreamliner flight from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport to Warsaw on Wednesday. LOT is the only European airline operating the new high-tech aircraft.
LOT Polish Airlines’ inaugural flight from Warsaw left at 4:18 p.m. local time and landed in Chicago at 7:28 p.m. Other …
By today, it became a world-wide grounding:

This is all precautionary. Boeing is essentially a massive assembly operation so it's not terribly surprising that a faulty part from a supplier has caused an issue. Reminds me of our HPFP issues.

The A380 isn't a competitor to the 787, the 747-800 is (sort-of). At any rate, the A380 has had its fair share of launch issues as well. Did you ever read about Qantas flight 32 (http://avherald.com/h?article=43309c6d%2F0007&opt=0)? They also have issues with wing cracks. The dispatch rate for the 787 has actually been pretty good (higher than the 777 at launch) and is on par with most clean sheet aircraft designs at launch.

A couple of days ago, a family member of mine who does some mechanical engineering for a company I assume works with Boeing said the 787 was having problems with its brakes.

That is actually pretty severe if you think about it. Imagine having HPFP in mid flight over the ocean.

The A350 which will be the direct competitor to the 787 is also using the same battery technology. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road as almost all new aircraft have their issues like what Litt pointed out with the A380.
