Question Speed limiter & Warranty

Is removing the speed limiter an issue for warranty?. Is it true that speed info is gathered from 4 different modules around the car and there is no way currently to delete it without leaving a trace in the ECU?

Yep, but most around here don't like to talk about it. Speed delimiters work by clamping the vehicle speed hardware sensor going to the ECU, but the actual speed is coming from the stability control module and being transmitted to various nodes including the ECU via the vehicles bus.

This maximum speed is stored in these modules, like the stability control module, and can be pulled by the dealer. In addition the ECU also receives the true speed via the bus and is aware the bus speed and hard-wire speed do not correlate, which can throw plausibility codes.

Most likely not going to be a problem unless you have a serious warranty claim though. Like blown turbo/motor that justifies opening a PUMA case. Or a serious accident where an insurance company or district attorney is looking to assign blame. But that data is thereand can be pulled easily.

As Mike said it can throw codes but may not. Just because the code is not there does not mean they will not be able to pull the data from the different modules and see that you have gone over the factory speed limit of 130 or 150 depending on if you have the sports package. You are basically taking a crap shoot that they will not look for it during warranty claim inspection.

The BT also does not show maximum engine RPM, but this data is stored in the ECU and other modules as well to be used for warranty denial. Just be aware that if something serious happens the true speed is available. And the fact that the true speed is greater than 155 will reveal the car was tuned.

interesting...I wonder if it holds true about the other components in the car storing that...with folks with PROcedes more so for the ones that do clear out there codes. b/c until someone proves it I dont believe it.

For most people that actually USE a speed de-limit... these are the least of their worries.

Codes? None that I have seen heard of.

Sure, technically it *could* throw a code... but it doesn't.

FWIW, the PROcede ships default config to NOT have the de-limiter active... meaning, that the user themselves has to change the setting in the software before they can go over the limiter.

I looked into it and purchased one but sold it before I ever installed it for the sole reason that if I blew my motor or turbos I dont want to have to arbitrate it. But the guy in germany I sold it to said his 135i did 184.3mph with a jb3 and dp's (measured on a gps).

I had few puma cases and had my turbo's replaced. 10+ fuel pump and used the speed delimiter as well. No problems what so ever with the dealer.. (knock on wood)
Went into the dealer WITH a tuner related code before too and still got my warranty. They gave me hard time but after some back and forth phone calls. It was settled and warranty was issued.
Dealers CANT just say you threw some tuner code and deny warranty. TRUST ME.

ya it is really going to depend on the dealer and how cool they are about things and understanding people mod these cars and drive them hard because they were marketed as performance cars. Silly to think people wont drive them hard.
