First Attempt: 335i tuning from the nerds at Vishnu
Hi guys,
It's been 5 days since we got our car. Fortunately, most of us here are a bit obsessive when it comes to digging into perfectly fine, brand new cars and seeing if we can come up with any newfound power. We're nowhere close to being done. I still want to get control of the closed loop fuel targets, directly control the boost contol solenoids as well as interface with the vanos system. That's at least a few weeks out. So far, all we did was minor ignition timing, fuel and boost pattern tweaks. Even on our 91oct, I suspect there is still a good deal more power that can be safely extracted once we have finished this project. Once again, these results are just our first attempt at tuning this car. It does not represent a complete tune. It's just one step at a time. Results: The gains were greatest at higher engine speeds. At 7000rpm, it picked up nearly 70whp with richer-than-stock A/F ratio. Peak WHP increased from 278 to 310whp at 6000rpm. Torque from 288lb-ft to 311lb-ft. I stayed nice and conservative at low to mid engine speeds (where, quite frankly, we should see the biggest gains when all is said and done). This was because I don't yet have control of the AFR targets in this region. The stock fuel mapping is too lean to run either the extra boost the turbos most certainly are capable of supporting, or optimal spark advance. Once we get control of the fuel in this region, we can start to turn up the wick and really get the sick midrange torque than the hardware is capable of supporting. For now, all we really wanted to do is make the car charge to redline instead of fall flat above 6000rpm. We did a little more than that but that was just an unexpected bonus. More to come in the next few weeks. Until then, it's back to testing. Stock vs. First Attempt at tuning (whp and torque) Bone Stock: Runs 2 and 3 "Tooned": Runs 15 and 16 91oct CA gas Cheers, shiv Vishnu Performance Systems Last edited by OpenFlash; 09-15-2006 at 12:08 AM.. |

Just unbelievable. 32hp and 23 lb-ft gained. This makes G35 and IS350 so inferior. When we can squeeze all the power out, we may see somewhere 15hp and 10 lb-ft more...that will blow any competive away.

Greetings Shiv,
Welcome aboard - I knew your work when I had a modified STI and you are a welcome addition to the BMW community. When you say boost pattern tweaks, are you implying the stock 335 tapers boost off towards the upper part of the RPM range and you were able to get the car to hold boost all the way up? Also, can you share what type of boost readings you were getting? |

As a comment: I love what you guys are doing! Only a couple of people in the world would test out their real cars, and you guys are experts! This is unbelievable.
But like you said before, and i will agree, i will be very hesitant to do anything to my car unless it keeps the factory warranty. I dont know if talking to BMW is a good idea, but it maybe. Keep up the excellent work!!!!!

i remember reading about their EVO stuff. the thing that attracted me was that their stuff seemed to have solid engineering behind it, and didn't seem to take an overly aggressive approach. Some tuners will do that, but at what cost to the integrity of the components? I'd rather take a few less gains on paper than to risk screwing up the car. And I'd trust a nerd to a gearhead on my car anyday.... just come out with some products!
