Euro vs US Exhaust Component Diagrams

There has been some discussion about differences between the European and USA exhaust systems. So I decided to compare these on the E90 330i.

EURO EXHAUST MANIFOLD WITH CATALYST:

US EXHAUST MANIFOLD WITH CATALYST

EURO EXHAUST SYSTEM, REAR (ONE DIAGRAM)

US CATALYTIC CONVERTER/FRONT SILENCER AND REAR EXHAUST SYSTEM (TWO DIAGRAMS)

What seems to be apparent from the above diagrams is that both US and Euro versions have catalytic converters built into the exhaust manifolds. The difference is that the US models have an additional set of catalytic converters in the center pipe. The Euro models simply have pipes. Both US and Euro exhausts have resonators.

This all implies that when going with an aftermarket system that uses headers (I'm thinking Supersprint here), the total number of cats will be reduced by two, which has me a little concerned about the exhaust emissions sniffer test.

That's interesting. So in the US the S pipes would replace the "S" section that contains two cats (US only)--Euro version has no cats there. This Eisenmann pipes are stainless steel right?

In the following diagram of the US exhaust, the red arrows point to the secondary cats:

All Eisenmann products are 304ss grade A. Btw do you know what Cell rating the US post Cats are?

But will the Supersprint s-pipe fit as a stock replacement for the one with the cats??? Would it bolt right up??? For us in states with no emissions check??

I don't know the answer to this. RYANM330CI or hunter399 can probably answer the question in reference to the Eisenmann S pipes.

As for the Supersprint system, it's the Euro version, so I am not sure you can simply bolt them onto the stock exhaust manifold piping. Those who had purchased the Kerscher Quad exhaust had to have some modification to their systems at muffler shops because of this difference.

Here's a photo of the stock US exhaust:

...the Supersprint S-pipes:

...and the Eisenmann S-pipes:

re-live

With the Eisenmann SR pipes, that's their own cat or stock cat? I'm fine with no resonator and run their race muffler.

Own cats, so these are pretty much good for Cali. emissions and just a bolt on set up, yeah?

I've been meaning to get these parts but instead of just a dual, I've been day dreaming for a "what if" quad, just replace the bumper either from **********s or jlevisw site, find an install shop like sonic motorsports in the bay area. People will say trying to be like an M3 but my preference might as well do the best you can with what can potentially happen.

Since 2007 (N53) European models have secondary cats. You can order SuperSprint midpipes with or without the cats.
SuperSprint for European cutless exhaust:

mines n52 but on their website there are no pipes for 328i sedan with cats, I'd still go with the Eisenmann SR DP's, just wish i can hear it in person at least. Our v6 engine won't make the best noise, just hoping it won't sound to Civicky vrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeee instead of VRRROOROOORORORORO

yoko kai,

Get the race system. It's pretty quiet at cruising, no drone whatsoever.

The race system has the backfiring sound, I'm not sure if you like it, but I like it a lot.

speedfan you should get COTM definitely, your car is an inspiration also. From your previous videos that is with the eisenmann installed? I was trying to find the backfiring sound but I know any aftermarket delivers with sound even the cheap ones, I learned that when I put a cheap flowmaster muffler on my eclipse.

Yoko Kai, thanks for the nice words. Yes it was August COTM.
Yes, the clip was made for the Eisenmann exhaust, however, at the time the exhaust system was very new & not broken in yet.
It's a bit louder & deeper now & I love it.

For our NA car, you should be picky of what exhaust system you put on. You might even lose some power if you put on the cheap one.
IMO, Eisenmann & BMW Performance are pretty popular & solid.

Yeah I'll be setting up the eisenmann full race system and BMW PI.

I'd like to hear your broken in exhaust too if you have a video ready.
