My experience is limited to shooting 2 1911s. Sig Scorpion and the NH pictured above. I can't speak for longevity for either, but the sig shoots very well. The mags are crap but then replacements don't cost that much. I'm told that the heavy duty finish is responsible for the lengthy break in period. They make other 1911 models too.

I am picking my my Loaded tomorrow It was a toss up between Loaded and Range Officer, but I went with Loaded because it already came with ambi safety. BTW, they come US made and Brazil made. US made ones have serial numbers that start with "NM". Brazil is "N". Price difference is usually $40-50 with US ones more expensive. Check GunBroker. Buying there will save you at least $150, even with FFL transfer and shipping fees. I bought mine for $700, while local stores were in $900-950 range.

Getting a cheap 1911 has one huge disadvantage - they are mass produced and tolerances suffer, thus reducing accuracy, but at the same time it has it's advantages - you don't have to drop $3-5K on a gun right away. People use something like a Springfield as a baseline and go to town. Weld new slide rails, replace springs, triggers, hammers, matched barrel and barrel bushing, replace guide rods, mainspring housing with or without magwell, replace MIM (Metal Injection Moulding) parts with billet machined parts, grips, sights and so on... Pretty much every modification, except cosmetic ones, affects the gun in one way or another. Hell, even cosmetic ones like grips or front and back strap checking may affect the feel, which in turn may affect your shooting. Check out these guys. They post lots of pictures of the guns they work on http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alchem...81101065256477 Some good reading here: http://militarytimes.com/blogs/gears...ur-first-1911/ Buy it. Shoot it. Replace things as you go.

You can feel the difference just between lower cost factory guns and their more upscale cousins. Edit: I know just enough about custom 1911s to be dangerous, I have stopped myself from researching because that leads to buying Last edited by MisterSkiMask; 06-29-2012 at 01:28 PM. |

That is one fine-looking 1911.

Buy a Springfield. Colt's have way too many rough edges for the money, and they're not any better than the springfield.

I had a SA GI model that I could never get to work correctly, and sold. I have a stainless Colt 1911 worked on by local gunsmith Ed Masaki that does shoot great, but I had to spend $700 or so for the work.

If you are left-handed like me, you can get Loaded which comes with ambi-safety or get RO and a Wilson Combat Bulletproof ambi-safety, plus fitting, which will most likely be required. Will probably end up being the same price after that. RO is made for range. If this is your main purpose and you are not left-handed, just go with that. You will not be sorry. I promise.

I think I have figured out the F2F issue with my compact. After reading a thorough investigation, it appears it's a factory issue. The slide lock has a small piece of plastic that grabs the slide when you're out of ammo. That piece of plastic is too close to the rounds, and since the XD uses a left/right feed technique, the rounds on the left are catching.
The remedy is to file down that plastic tip. Looking at pictures he posted it looks like mine may be suffering that, but it doesn't look quite as bad as the picture. I'm also reluctant to shave this tip down. Edit:This is what he saw: ![]() My gun, with two rounds in: ![]() With three rounds in: ![]()

I wouldn't mess with that Collin. Call Springfield first. Their customer service is excellent and they offer a whole array of custom services available if you choose to send it in. Might as well have them do something cool while its there.
They may be aware of the problem in that particular model, or maybe be able to offer a suggestion. I too would be reluctant to start filing on my gun. |
