The LCP definitely has some kick to it, being that it such an incredibly lightweight gun firing a .380 cartridge. The palm of my hand was a little sore after firing 100 rounds of WWB FMJs through it my first time out at the range with it. Despite the recoil, I still put some fist-size or better groups together at 7 yards using the Crimson Trace laser that came equipped on the gun from the factory (a necessity for this gun, as the iron sights are completely non-existent). That being said, the LCP is really not a range gun, it is primarily just a self-defense/carry gun, and after breaking it in, I wouldn't shoot more than 50 rounds out on the range with it unless I had to. Also, the LCP comes with a 9# recoil spring, which I thought was inadequate. I instead ordered a 13# recoil spring (extremely inexpensive yet excellent in quality) from Wolff Springs and I enjoy the pistol even more now. It should have come from the factory like this. The 13# spring definitely helps to lessen the felt recoil of the LCP. Check out this site, it has all the LCP info you will ever need: http://www.elsiepeaforum.com/.

i would skip keltec altogether. those guns are pretty flimsy and known to breakdown pretty quickly if you ever want to practice fire them. i considered an LCP and the diamondback, ended up with the diamondback because it's constructed very solidly and very much like a 'pocket glock'. i've fired hundreds of rounds through it no problems or jams. LCP is a great gun too, but i would at least consider the diamondback.

maryland is one of the harder states to get a permit. they aren't very gun-friendly there. you would have to show that you have a need for one. i don't think someone threatening you unless an aggressive action has already been taken is enough reason to be granted one. call a local gun club/shooting range and ask.

In PA, you mail a check to your sheriff. That's it. I think you can get a picture card now if you really want one. But, you do not need a LTCF, CCW, CWP or whatever the hell your state calls that stupid piece of (unconstitutional) paper to open carry. I'm not a big proponent of open carry, but it's an option if you're otherwise able to own a firearm legally. I prefer CC, but your mileage may vary. Read up on this, bc MD is funky. Also, a lot of states and local municipalities are guilty of "preemption violations" (basically overwriting the UFA and illegally restricting the rights of citizens.) You prob don't want to be a test case, but if you are... thank you. A great resource is this site: www.PAFOA.org/forum. Make sure you know the laws and make safety an absolute habit - then, TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN. There's a huge different between knowing how to operate a firearm versus knowing how to fight with one effectively. Stay safe. |

I've gone shooting a few times with my friend and I'm looking into getting my first gun. Eventually I want to get something like an AR, but I think that to start out with, a handgun is pretty smart.
![]() I've shot my friends 9mm and 40cal, and I liked his 9mm a lot better. Maybe it was just that particular gun, but it was much more accurate than his 40. I think his 9mm was a Ruger and I can't remember the brand of his 40. The main attributes I'm looking for are accuracy, ease of use, price, and then probably less weight. Any good suggestions for a 9mm? If there was a good 40 I would consider that one, but based off my limited experience I like the 9mm better. I don't plan to conceal carry it, so being able to hide it isn't an issue.

To be honest, a handgun is not a good choice for a first firearm. Longarms, present a much better platform to learn safety and general shooting techniques. In some ways, they're much safer - it's much easier to accidentally sweep people with the muzzle or commit other BAD things with a handgun. Also, poor trigger technique is easier to develop with a handgun. I would recommend a bolt action rifle to get started. But, to answer you questions, or not... I don't think I could honestly recommend a specific handgun to a new shooter. My advice would be to go to a local range, tell them you are learning and you want to TRY EVERYTHING to see what you like. There will be so many different little things to consider - (think of me buying my first BMW and asking: what are the best mods?) Try it all. You need to learn what you like. A good range/shop will be more than happy to let you try them all. Plus, it's fun to shoot a lot! ![]() For a 9mm... hell... XD9, Glock17,19,20whatever (actually, would like to see you get something with a manual safety while learning tho), Sigs, 1911 clones... you name it. Check out the site I mentioned above. I don't post there any more, but it's an incredible resource... Good luck with your search. |

If you are looking for an accurate (accuracy depends on the shooter mostly), easy to use, lightweight pistol, I would recommend a Glock 19 (9mm). They are priced very reasonably for a high-quality handgun, somewhere in the $450-$550 range, depending where you buy it. (PICTURED BELOW.) A Springfield Armory XDm 9 would also be a solid choice, but I do not particularly care for the XD. However, it is a very solid choice also. My best advice: Try out as many 9mm pistols as you possibly can and see what works for you!

The Jericho 941 was discontinued a long time ago. It was a package that included a 9x19 barrel and magazines as well as a 41AE barrel and mags. The 41AE is a dead round, killed off by the 40S&W. I had one and loved the ergonomics of it, but this was back in 1993-94. 41AE = 41 Action Express.
You can get the current version though, as it is now called the "Baby Eagle" and "Baby Eagle II". Although, it is out of stock at 2 distributors that I checked, so maybe Magnum Research is having some problems.....

I was at the range today and the other day, and shot several 9mm and .40 and .45, and my favorite is the Glock 23 .40 9mm felt too... flimsy? For loss of a better work. I like the kahr k40 as well. Don't want to jump the gun yet (pun not intended) and buy a gun yet...

Alright, I'm still debating between these 380 pocket pistols...P238, LCP and now the DB380.
I like the P238 just because it's a mini-1911 The single action trigger is by far better than the LCP I've dry fired. But the manual safety is harder to disengage than my standard 1911s....no good for a CCW.The LCP is cheaper than the rest and seems to be well regarded. Downside is recoil is harder than the P238 (reviews on the net). Thanks to Blake, I've now added the DB380 into the mix. Looks good as a mini-glock. Some reviews have the trigger being mushy. Doesn't appear to have the unique grip angle of the standard glocks, which is good for me since I've built muscle memory with the grip angle on the 1911s. Blake, can you verify the grip angle? Thanks! I'm going to a gun show in April and will probably pick up one of these bad boys there.
