Drove an E46 SMG M3 for the first time

SMG is jerky as has been said time and time again. However it suits the raw character of the M3 very well, just not everday L.A. traffic. All other aspects considered it's a great car, the steering is nice and meaty though not big on on center feel; it does great in the twisties. The ride is quite stiff especially on the '19 wheel option ("18's would probably be the better fit), I swear my head started to hurt after I got out of the car. I have a feeling though, that the E92 M3 will take the sports car game to the next level, a level the E46 only sees off in the distance; the 911.

The SMG is only jerky if you let it. The one time I drove an SMG M3 (my friend's, with about 18k miles), I was able to, within about 10 minutes, get perfectly smooth shifts even in the S6 mode and WOT. The trick is to very subtly lift off the throttle at the moment of shifting. If you do that, the shifts are hardly noticable. Now, I didn't even bother to try out the "A" modes, since I am a "stick-driver," so I can't comment on that.
