Still one of my favorite photos of all time. It made the rounds a few years ago as one of the 'best picture of 200x' slideshows.

Looked like a shark to me at the time and still does now. But, like 95% of the population, I know jack about marine biology and it just looks like a big fish! (yes, I know dolphins are mammals..). It's kind of like asking a non-enthusiast about the difference between a 328 and a 335. MOST people just can't tell... to them it's just a foreign car.

Spotted schools of dolphin in Malibu riding the surf break line. Some jumpers too...just like Flipper.

just remember, if you're in the water and the fin coming at you is going up and down, don't worry its a dolphin. Now, if its going side to side, you might want to calmly head for the beach.

EXACTLY! The angle / distortion in the 1st shot made the nose look sharper and more shark-like; but the angle of the caudal is a dead give-away.

Whew! Now, I have seen sharks off of the beach and does make one pause...

its a dolpin. sharks dont show them selves around preys they attack from under. 99.9% of the time you see dorsal fins at the beach its dolpins. i go body boarding and i see the dolpins all the time.
