I know, what a stupid discussion this is. Debating a car that might have the potential to knock the M3 from it's lofty place as the best car in this sector.

How silly of us.

I would have to imagine that the RS5 is faster and will put up better track times than the M3.

Audi had full access to the M3 during the majority of the development of the RS5... they knew their target. If they were unable to beat it 2.5+ years later I think it has to be considered a failure for Audi.

From everything I have been told about the RS5 I am pretty confident that all the above comments it will fulfil, whether it's as entertaining or engaging a drive as the M3 is another matter and this can and will be up to each and every individual who drives it.

I am sure that Audi set out with two very distinct goals for the RS5, one was to build a car that was better in every way from the one it replaced and two to exceed the M3's performance stats while putting their own unique stamp on the whole experience, on both counts I am sure it will succeed. After all this is an Audi not a BMW and no one would ever expect or want Audi to mimic the driving experience the BMW give in the M3.

I wish Audi had flared the front fenders and the rear quarter panels. The front end is SO HOT and then it becomes so bland around the side. It almost looks incomplete. Dont get me wrong, I love this car and want to buy one, but every time I see a hi res pic, it looks so bland.
And I would also prefer a fixed spoiler than a retractable one....IMO.

They flared the fenders ever so slightly in a manner similar to the RS6, but less apparent. I don't mind, it still retains its beauty while looking aggressive. Also, that aluminum chin doesn't look bad as I thought it would. My M6 looks 5 years old in comparison to this I wish they put that big night vision camera in the Audi ring instead though

What you are seeing in the pics posted by trvfan is a stock RS5. The alloy optic pack gives you alloy difusser front and rear, the grill retains the alloy trim as normal. Black optic pack gives you blacked out grill but not the different coloured difussers.

I'm not a lover of the alloy pack but do like the black pack.

Audi needs to decide if it wants to make performance cars or luxury barges. They are a company that is loaded with brilliant engineers, look at the R8 as a perfect example of what they can do if they put their mind to it.

But every Audi in the performance line (S4, RS4, RS6) that I have ever driven has fallen SQUARELY in the "put a bigger engine in the standard luxury car and add some trim pieces" category. As bad as Audi is, Mercedes is even worse.

Sorry, but my C63 AMG begs to differ.

M are really special and will stay so, even with FI and AWD. Try X6 xDrive50i and then X6 M. They are amazingly different, and I do not think it is possible to mod an X6 xDrive50i to make it better than X6 M.

While I might have agreed with you may be 5-6 years ago I most definitely don't agree any more. There is a definite separation between the models from A to S to RS, but I will say that with each evolution of the model their step up in ability and use what is learned with the RS and adopt to the lesser versions, that is why many including myself are of the opinion that the latest B8 S4 is every bit as good if not better than the B7 RS4 from the previous model.
