two things: 1: dont lock and unlock car from a distance, try to stay as close to ur car as possible to avoid the signal spreading too far (hopefully that will help); 2: soon they will probably update the system to a rolling code so that any signal doesnt become the stagnant always good signal..(crosses fingers)

I'm not going to lose any sleep at night. If your car is targeted by professionals, it is gone. It doesn't matter if you have CA, an alarm, etc.

Thanks to the good folks for testing their theory and publishing it on the internet for others to duplicate.

I'm no EE, but I don't think the distance to the receiver is going to govern the range of the transmitter.......

I always touch the handle to lock and unlock. Hope that helps deter this from happening.

This is why you have car insurance.

If they want your car they will get it. It's as easy as sticking a gun in your face and saying "hand over the keys."

I think you guys are misunderstanding

He's got two things here.

1. Receiver
2. Transmitter

Two person at work here. The first guy gets close to YOU. Your key is always transmitting some signal (since you got CA)

The second guy gets close to the car. The signal from your key is picked up by first guy's receiver, wirelessly sent to 2nd guy's transmitter, which is then sensed by your car. Your car thinks the key is close, and allows all functions.

Basically he's magnifying your CA's signal.

Locking your door from the inside only works if you don't have CA. No clicking buttons on your key = no RF transmitted.

what if we have CA code covers? so you undo your cover and then access ur car..for the few seconds u do that itll be exposed and vulnerable, but after that if you have the cover on your little remote you should be safe i would think...

It doesn't matter. The amount of data you send to unlock the door in a short amount of time would still be recorded, manipulated, and sent back out. Chances are all you need to do is get out of the car and walk past somebody else a few cars over (8m = close to 40 feet) and they have your info.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what YOU do. It matters how car manufactures start protecting people by protecting their technology.

Call me tomorrow. We'll start with basic physics then make our way through wave-particle theory. By the end of the day you will get to solder your own crystal radio and earn a merit badge..

In some seriousness, this is why some RFID applications aren't that great... e.g. passports. The company I use to expedite my visas sells passport covers to prevent such threats. I think my duplicate passport came with one, but I don't use it.

There was a thread not long ago. RFID technology is currently not very safe.

As in other posts, if professionals target your car, its gone. One post said that his was gone in 3 minutes or something like that, and could not get a signal for tracking.
At least we dont drive Escalades.....
