Come to Portland. The liberal idiots in this city welcome the homeless with open arms. In fact, Las Vegas got caught busing homeless people to us a year or two ago. We have a large amount of social services and a mild climate so they flock here. During the summer there are panhandlers on just about every corner of downtown. Most of our homeless aren't people with mental issues (yes there are this type too), rather Portland attracts the homeless youth population in large numbers. This group embraces the lifestyle and chooses to live this way. The stay in groups and can get very aggressive (safety in numbers probably) when people do something they don't like (which can be as little as ignoring them). I've seen them follow women for blocks harassing them and threatening them. They'll keep it up until they either get money from them or others step in (I've done this several times). I've seen them throw rocks at nice cars that get stopped by them on freeway exit ramps when they don't give them money. The list goes on and on. Anytime the city tries to do anything about it, the libtards in this city cry foul and run the rescue of the less fortunate that cannot possibly help themselves. It's ludicrous.

On another note.....
I have a friend in Orange County who, during the summer her and her girlfriends who are incredibly hot, would dress shitty and make themselves look destitute. Then they would go down to the beach and hang out for the day panhandling. Basically they would spend the day at the beach hanging out begging for money. They would bring home $500-700 a day (each one of them) when they did this.

I lived in Queens NY for a few years. They would clean my windshield with a bottled water and a dirty rag. At least they provided some type of service.

I'm overlooking Byant Park as I type this. I'm also not a tourist so I have no reason to visit Times Sq. I'm not saying there aren't any, but there are far less in this city than there are in other cities, with the worst being SF, in my experience.

NYC initiated a program in 2007 that offers free one-way plane tickets to the homeless if they have a place to go at their destination. This could partially account for the drop in transients in the city. Over 550 families used the program to leave by 2009. I can't find a statistic for people that have left to-date.

I'm sure the percentage of homeless that have relocated is negligible due to the sheer population in the city.

I thought panhandling was illegal in some states.

Hell if I care. I'm the OP. Worked on 625 Madison Ave for 10 years. I miss the days of having tons of lunch options just a few steps away.

I been to make cities world wide and the are beggers all over the place. It not a US thing as some people may want to believe. The US does rank the highest, but the two worst non US place is Mexico or India. The reason I say that is in those countries you tend to see a lot more kids doing it so they tend to pull at your heart more than some adult who looks like that given up on life.

As some pointed out SF seems to be really bad, I come from the East Coast and live in CA for some time and in the East most beggers were usually bums and bag ladies and you learn to ignore them over time. When I move to CA and spent time in SF I was surprise to see entire families on the street living in boxes and door ways. What I learns was since CA is so expensive to live any set back someone may encounter may put them out on the street.

The screwed up part was that the suggestion was made to relocate these people to lower cost of living places and you could not believe the fight that people put up and said it was not right to do that, at the time the US closed down a military Base near Monetary which had large number of single family homes and barracks which people could use and live in and the suggest was made to allow the homeless to live there and again people said you can not make people live in substandard house the Military did not want any more.

There is an old saying which is teach people to fish not fish for them, and too much today we fish for people so the never learn to support themselves. Some people can not be saved nor do they want to be saved.

The worst panhandlers are the "moms" holding a drug induced baby.

It's a new business where there is a ring leader who assigns these ladies to panhandle all day with a real baby that I believe they paid some desperate mother to get. These babies don't cry all day because they're either on Heroine or drunk. Some of these babies don't make it through a day.

I read the story on my FB newsfeed but can't find it. The guy who wrote the story said he observed the same lady for a day and noticed the baby never cried and thought something was odd. When he confronted the panhandler, she wouldn't look up at him or talk to him and her "pimp" came out of nowhere and ask him why "would you talk to her like that, just leave".

Some really sad stuff

also tried to give this nutjob $1 "just because"...

he then tells me "before I take this $1 from you, tell me one thing, how do you feel about homosexuality ??"

I said "I don't care, people will love whoever they want"

he then says to me "well, that $1 is coming from someone who doesn't believe in the bible's word".

I laughed and said, "well, this dollar will help wash your dirty shirt and beard you have".

he told me to go fuck myself and then I rolled my window up and rolled out...

that was the straw that broke the camel's back - never again have I offered any money to a pandhandler.....

p.s.
pics for proof, because I always fucking posts pics......

guy didn't wanna be in the shot, obviously.....

Reminds me of a coworker that bought an extra hamburger for lunch and gave it to the panhandler outside the joint. He threw it back at her and said "I don't want this shit.... cash only bitch".

Just a reminder that sometimes panhandlers are really just normal folks who went down the wrong path or down on their luck.
