Downpipe Before Exhaust? Or....
What's going on guys?
I was wondering if I should go DP before I get a exhaust or the other way around? I currently have a stock engine bay except for a bms intake (N55) and did the golf tee mod. I'm looking for a throatier sportier exhaust note but trying to avoid drone and raspiness. I'm still currently under warranty (for about another year and a half) so I'm worried that if I get a downpipe and bring it in for service (Paul Miller BMW, Wayne) they might reject it. I figured they wouldn't say much about the exhaust itself, especially if I went BMW PE. I figure I'm going to get a downpipe eventually for the power gains I just don't know if I should jump on it now or save up for an exhaust and wait till I'm out of warranty. Any suggestions? Also what is the favorited DP when it comes to N55 engines? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I have the BMS downpipe and I love it. If you just want to elevate your exhaust without a huge jump in drone, I would recommend keeping the stock exhaust and putting a DP. The DP without a tune can give up 10hp to wheel. Also the downpipe helps the turbo breathe without it restricting it. My SA told me that the down pipe would have to be the cause of the problem for them to void it, so the chances your intake would void the warranty before a DP since it is after the turbo.

The stock catback isn't as restrictive on our cars, especially without a secondary cat on the N55 mid-pipe. Downpipe, FMIC, charge pipe and intake + tune = FBO

You most certainly do have secondary's (I have the same car). I'm not entirely sure about the RWD N55's, but the xDrives do.
I have a BMS downpipe with the stock catback. Sounds good. If you're into a more conservative sound, shoot for this. Coming from a straight-piped WRX though, it's not loud enough for me. Going to get my perforated pipes replaced with straightpipes ASAP. |

I would do downpipe since it will give you good gains. Exhaust is mainly the exhaust note. But you should do both eventually!!

Check this out too:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=739970 ^ This is what I'll be doing. About $1000 cheaper than a catback. Can't justify (at this point in my life) spending upwards of $1000 for just sound. |

I just installed AR design DP and JB4. I choose the AR DP before the exhaust, with no regrets

No DP fix for the N55. you will need a tune to get rid of the CEL.
Also, i'm pretty sure BMS stopped selling DPs, they received a warning from CA. You can try finding a used BMS DP. Or buy a new one from AR (expensive), VRSF (priced similarly to BMS) etc... |
