I don't think they developed anything there. It looks like they applied a coating of neverwet or everdry super-hydrophobic coating. I could be wrong but that technology has been around a while

Yea maybe a version that works. I've heard durability and gloss are prominent issues

Agreed. You can see in the commercial that they have the normal half of the car masked off so that they can spray the coating onto the hydrophobic half. That makes me think that this will most likely be a dealer-installed option just like the "2 year" paint sealant that they try to sell you.
