Which Car...?

Hey guys, I've been a member a while and I'm pretty young at 17 years old. I currently drive my dad's Mercedes-Benz E350 to and from school, and I'm probably going to keep it until I'm done with college then invest in a face-lifted 3 'er. But this thread is not about me... It's about my dad.

He's looking at getting a car to add to his collection, but he has some guidelines. It must be German (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche), it must be under $200,000 (so no Enzo's... sadly...), and it must be fairly practical. So the nose can't be too low, the ride comfort must exist, and the car can't be a Koeingsegg to drive.

I recommended a few cars to him, he is thinking about them, I just wanted to get some more suggestions. I suggested:

Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG: Roadster. Grand Tourer. Masseuse.

Porsche 911 Turbo: 480 Horsepower + 4WD = Instant Acceleration.

Porsche 911 GT2: Basically a faster, lighter Turbo; but costs more at $191,000.

BMW M5 or M6: Perfect for Bi-Polar people, due to the M Button. Under $100,000.

What other cars can you think of for an almost-60-year-old-balding-mid-life-crisis-father-of-two?

By practical, do you mean a realistic chance of owning or the ability to put groceries in a trunk?

I vote GT2 out of those choices AND you're $9k under your limit.

This car is for my dad and he is almost 60. So, the suspension can't be ridiculously hard and the nose can't be too low to the ground. With that being said, he's owned a few Porsche's in the past and has test driven the 997 Turbo. He said the car was very nice, but he was open to other options.

My dad may or may not sell his daily driver, so, this car would also have to have a trunk. Nothing like an X5's, but something that a briefcase can fit in. Oh, and sadly, it cannot be an insane Orange Lamborghini LP640 because my dad will worry about somebody damaging it until he goes insane.

A nissan Primera: Because its environmentally friendly, it sits 4 adults & can carry a few golf bags so its also very practical & with the rest of the money he should buy a property like a small house or an apartment which can generate an incoe & he could treat it as a pension for the rest of is life!!!

Not being a kill joy but u know when i see a old man driving an exotic sports car such as those u mentioned I kinda think.... It doesn't really work. But if he really must blow it all on a car then maybe an S65 AMG.

My dad goes to Track Days. My dad has been 155MPH on the Autobahn. My dad does not pose around at the beach on Sunday's in his Red Ferrari.

He drives. That's why he's looking at getting a GT2 or an SL55.

honestly,,,i would say to go for the R8

At well under 200 grand closer to 120 (including dealer mark up) i think the R8 would be a blast! and a head turner!

Well I don't know what kind of room is in the hood of a porsche, so I'll vote M6 now. How much does an Aston Martin cost? He could get any streetwalker with that.

GT2 hands down, but thats going to be more than $200,000.... I'd say get either the 911 turbo or the M5... I'd choose the M5 because I think the GT2 is just plain better in every way.

R8s not a bad choice. I prefer Porsche's looks but for someone who still wants comfort and a nice suspension, the R8 most likely has more of that than the Porsche does.

The R8 is by far the best at doing the Jekyll/Hyde supercar act. It has accessible performance and daily usability. It's also a looker.

I think the SL is a little meh. Although (emphasis on this word), the facelifted SL63 is looking to be an amazing car. It features the new MB-DCT with multiple shift modes and all that other stuff.

The M6 isn't a bad idea either, but something about it pales in comparison to the R8 which can be had for another $15k.

Okay, so, no to the SL55...? I agree, for $150-200k he could get a nicer car.

The M6 is a beast, but, I think that is a little bit too ordinary in SoCal, believe it or not. This is going to be the 5th or 6th car in our garage (including my mom's car, my brother's, and mine), so, I want it to be a little more exotic and more... Fun.

The GT2 is an amazing car, but... With fees, taxes, and options it'll be pushing $220,000-250,000. So, it's looks like it's between the Audi R8 and 911 Turbo.

Audi R8:

4.2 Liter V8, Quattro:

HP: 420
LB-FT: 317
0-60 MPH: 4.4s
Curb Weight: 3,605

Options and Accessories:

6-Speed Manual ($0)
Phantom Black Pearl ($650)
Black Alcantara/Leather Seats ($0)
Premium Package ($3,500)
Bang & Olufson Sound System ($1,800)
Audi Navigation Plus ($2,000)
Alcantara Headliner ($1,300)

Total Price: $118,250

911 Turbo:

Twin-Turbo Flat-6, AWD:

HP: 480
LB-FT: 505
0-60 MPH: 3.7s
Curb Weight: 3,494

Options and Accessories:

6-Speed Manual ($0)
Basalt Black Metallic ($0)
Black Extended Leather + Sport Seats ($1,145)
Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes ($8,840)
Sport Chrono Package - Turbo ($1,920)

Total Price: $138,105

Well look at it now...the P-car is a DRIVERS CAR!

the R8 will be fun to drive and also semi-rare....

if you live in SoCal you know what im talking about!

whats the verdict?

I've been talking to my dad over these few days and he's going to test drive the R8. He has already driven the Turbo and he loves it, he says it's very comfortable and refined, but it is also "supercar fast".

I think the Audi will be set up softer and will have a nicer interior, but it weights 100lbs more, has 60 less horsepower, and is down nearly 190 lb-ft of torque.

He helped me configure the cars above, and I'm pretty sure he's going to go to spend the extra 20 grand and get the Turbo.
