2007 BMW 328i vs Volvo C70

Very interesting article. http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...hotopanel..3.*

These facts astonish me.

The BMW's top makes the switch in 22 seconds, the Volvo's in roughly 30.

Despite weighing more than the Volvo and having less power, the BMW actually feels faster. It's no illusion either, as the 328i runs a full second quicker from zero to 60 mph at the track.

The Volvo is a nice piece but it still falls a bit flat. I love what BMW can do with heavy cars. Now lets watch them with a relatively light one.

I had a loaner 328 sedan (too bad they don't loan-out the coupe and cab at my dealership) over the weekend and was really surprised how quick the car is
and how much power the 2.8 has.
But, what a barge the sedan is...numb feeling to the steering, no sweet engine noise in the cabin, and a weird throttle response...press the accelerator and wait for 1/2 a sec for the engine to get the command.
It's as if the BMW engineers dialed out all the visceral qualities that makes my Z4 so much fun.

I agree, the 1-er's gonna be fun...even if we end up with a 2.8 engine in the base model...hopefully people will get that special feeling that is missing in so many recent BMW models.

I thought the 328i had the 3.0 liter engine. Does BMW even make a 2.8???

Yes, you're right, it's the 3.0 liter but detuned and designated the 2.8...which makes things confusing.

Hah, you're too young to lose it! I checked out your web page...
what, only 3 girlfriends?

Seriously, the designations are so weird...they're supposed to be readable-
for example the 328i sedan...simple/3-series/2.8 liter fuel-injected engine...but nooooo.
It's a mild deceptive practice that I wish BMW would change but it would probably confuse more people than the current system.

My 2.5 sport (which thankfully is no longer made) is also a detuned 3.0...but depress the sport button and you get apprx a 10% boost in hp....almost making up the difference between it and the real 3.0
...try telling that to someone eg, your significant other and they look at you like, "Uh, yeah."

Haha, well its only natural for me to take advantage of the necessary evil known as myspace. And thats 346 friends showing interest in the 1er coupe and counting!!!

But yeah i noticed that those numbers USE to stand for something. I cant believe they went away with that. Benz does the same thing in some models. i dont know...sheesh. Its still cool to explain about the button though. It really works. I went this a ladies and gents to the drive for cancer, and my friend drove the z4 without tampering with the button. he didnt like it. I told him that he REALLY missed out...

Yeah he did...sports button definitely works...you can fell it kick in almost as soon as you push it.
The sports package (I paid 1k in 2004) is a great bargain on the option pkgs and I hope it's available on the 1-er.

I appreciate BMW for changing up their number designations, because they are only doing it to protect our resale value.

For instance in 1998 was the first time that BMW started this, when they brought out the 323is. The engine was a 2.5, but in order to protect the segment leading 325i from 1995 they did not want it to have the name on it that for so long had been the top of the 3 line.

They continued this until the bottom designation changed to 325i, in 2001. By then any residual resale from the 1995 325i would not be dramatically impacted, and the high end had changed to the 330i. However, as we all know the 325i was really a detuned 3.0.

This the same reason we still have the 328i today. Notice that 2007 is the first year that 328i is the lowest model. Again the did that in order to protect the resale and prestige of the earlier models that headed the line.

I should correct something. The 325 in 2001 was a real 2.5 litre, but the 325 in 2006 was a detuned 3.0
