I need help chosing a major
I am currently in a major that I do not want to be in and I want to change it. I'd like to do so before the next semester so I am not too deep into things that just might not count. I have just been let go from the Army Reserve to contract with Army ROTC and I am on a 3.5 year Active Duty scholarship but I will be switching to a National Guard scholarship after this semester. I would like to be involved in a field that pays well, well enough that I won't get sucked into a struggle but by all means I am perfectly ok with being in a field that pays less but will have me doing something that I love.
Considering I will be a National Guard Officer I need a civilian job as well and do not know how much I will stand out against the competition considering I am also a 2nd. Lieutenant, hopefully that will set me apart from the rest but who knows. Now on to the Major... Initially I felt I would do very well in marketing, I am very persuasive and marketing seems to be a field where you sell yourself and how well you do so dictates how high you climb but the Smeal College of business does NOT take transfers. So anything in the business college I am not eligable for. Note: I hate/am horrible at math and science goes in one ear and out the other so it looks like engineering is a horrible idea. I can handle the basics, and a major that requires a little bit but something geared around math/science will probably kick my ass. Teaching... doesn't sound like a bad gig at all, I would probably like it but it seems to be a field where I must accept a life without an E92 M3... ever. Any help would be great. |

Undergrad man, undergrad. And no offense I would probably kill myself if I was the defense attorney defending some scum bag or the prosecuter nailing some poor person to the cross because some d-bag wanted to sue them for something ridiculous.

what about a helicopter engineer, one of my friends did the same thing you are planning on doing, he makes a pretty decent income.
Oh shit, I didn't read the rest of the thread before Lol..... Ummm what about something like management? You can then probably find a decent job in some corporate office building downtown, but I dono if thats what you'd want to do... be stuck in a cubical for several years and then eventually making your way up to the big dogs club. |

What about a veterinarian? Its not as intense as a real doctor (as in you don't need to deal with all the blood surgery etc) but they make pretty good money, esp in Cali or NY where every other person has a pet.
Or if not, are you at all creative? If so, you could also go into graphic design and try and design cars/boats/motorcycles etc, or even advertisement or illustration. |

If you want to live in a decent neighborhood in cali shoot for high 5 figures or low 6's. 50k in the bay area let alone so-cal is shit.

You may have to transfer, I wouldn't let my options be quite so limited. It honestly sounds like you are interested in Marketing, if so thats what you should study.

Whatever you choose make sure you end up with a marketable skill - I cannot stress the importance of that enough. And yeah, these are generally the harder degrees, but then nothing worthwhile in life is a cakewalk.
Honestly, there are a lot of degrees out there that serve only as cash-cows for the university and don't really provide the recipient with anything worthwhile. |

I can not transfer schools. I am contracted/scholarship with Penn State Army ROTC.
Stipulations: Unless I add more years to my contract I can not delay my duty assignment for grad school, they will give me grad school and delay my assignment however my term of service will require me to ADD on to the 8 year obligation I already have and the term does not even begin until grad is overwith. I am already 23 and a sophomore. I would like some suggestions, I am aware that a vague degree is virtually a dead end. I don't mind getting into something very narrow as long as it's something I feel I want to do. A tough program is destined for failure if your heart isn't in it. |

No go on nursing. I do not have the pre-reqs to even qualify for the program nor the time to knock them out, the waiting list is huge for it as well. I am on scholarship (3.5 years) and then the money is gone. I am required to complete some degree in the alotted time.

No possibility of (or interest in) getting a full-time National Guard job when you graduate? Any interest in working for the federal government when you graduate? Lots of jobs in the administrative fields are not too particular what your major is.

How about something in law enforcement? Shoot to become a Detective or something. Its funny b/c your requirements were almost identical to mine. I switched my major so many damn times. My last step is IT. The industry is suppose to grow a lot in the coming years. I started a business pertaining to the auto industry a year ago. Its shockingly still doing great. You just gotta know who your potential customers are. I enjoy working for myself but a degree is an excellent fall back. Good Luck man.

I'm going to be a commissioned officer in the NG, hopefully that will make me stand out. Police department? No thanks, no offense but I have zero interest in criminal justice or law enforcement. And working full time as AGR for the Guard isn't an option to bank on, if an option at all as a 2nd Lieutenant.
