Washing machines

I know there is already a washing machine thread here somewhere but the search function sucks. I've noticed that the agitator on my washing machine is not moving. The tub still rotates in spin cycle. Are they different belts? I know I've had a belt replaced on it years ago but I think it was the tub belt

2019
WIFE: ok so the washer and dryer, what are we getting
ME: Top load
W: that's old fashioned and boring i want something nice
ME: front loads are less reliable and are harder to use every day
W: Why?
ME: water sits in the sill and needs to be wiped down PEOPERLY after every use, door also must be kept open
W: that sounds ok, how hard can that be?
ME: Really? You haven't emptied the vac and it has been full for weeks and you just keep grinding it, matter of time before it shits itself, if you don't wipe down a front load there will be heavy mold
W: you're just saying this because top load is cheaper
ME: *******sigh********* shows a million google hits on mouldy front loads
W: i'll clean it every time
ME: (full seinfeld mode when Kramer said he was going to do levels in his apartment) ... I think you can but I KNOW you won't.
W: we're getting a front load
ME: Ok but I ain't cleaning the mold, that's your problem

2021:
ME: All my clothes smell like wet dog
W: Yeah I noticed that
ME: You been wiping down that washer like I suggest you do every week and you ark at me for repeating myself?
W: No
ME: ***********sigh**********

Inside of the door and the bottom of the sill is absolutely CAKED in thick, black, goopy mold, entire rubber ring needs to be replaced, machine out of action.

WIFE: Can you call someone to................
ME: No fucking way, you sort it out.

I can do the EXACT same storyline when she ordered window covers with a motor and remote instead of a simple cord. I said they'd break, and they did.

I agree with Alfisti. Get a top load, if you're going to buy a new one.

I know little to nothing regarding this subject. I also, have never stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. There may a correlation here.

If you run into warranty issues because you own a Samsung washer, I got you covered. I've become a pro at filing warranty claims for Samsung appliances. Even managed to get Samsung to pay for my new LG washer.

Samsung and LG are rubbish. Ona budget, whirlpool/maytag, parts are PLENTIFUL and cheap and every hack repairman knows his way around them.

If serious, look at the semi industrial made in america hard core shit. They come with a bald eagle and chilli dog.

Ummmm....I can assure you, that if some semi-industrial, made in America shit is made, it is anything but hard core. If such an item exists, no one can afford it. If something is presently being manufactured, it's being manufactured to be tossed out in 3 years or less. @ the bald eagle and chilli dog comment, you forgot the LGBT pamphlet too, don't want to hurt anyone's feelings these days.

Alfisti hit the nail on the head. House we were renting had a nice BOSCH front load unit. Had it repaired once, no biggie. Thing went down again and the repair guy showed me the mold....I had no clue! I came from a simple family with the cheapest top load available back in the day.

Personally, I hate the center agitator on a top load but I think there are some without it nowadays.

And yes, there can be 2 belts

I don't know man I've been using an inexpensive GE washer and dryer for well over 10 years now and not a single issue with either of them.

I don't care if it doesn't make a cappuccino for me, I want it to wash and dry my clothes and that's it. I have zero need to download instructions, have chats or whatever the fuck modern Samsung/LG appliances do. Just wash my clothes and do it well. That's all I ask.

This is what I have, both the washer and dryer. I'm very happy with Speed Queen. I bought a top loader specifically not to deal with the front loader mold nonsense. And I love Clorox! I pour that stuff in my white washes big time. Can't do that with the front loader.

As far as I'm concerned, the more advanced they are, the more likely they will fail. Electronics will ALWAYS fail. Then you have to buy expensive replacement parts if out of warranty unless you get suckered into an extended warranty, etc. Screw that.

That's what I had for around the same length of time. A couple of years ago I bought a new washer/dryer, made by Crosley. Very similar to our old Kenmore. So far so good.

Got a 20+yr old GE "Commercial" grade washer and dryer.. super reliable, probably super inefficient though. Can put a couple weeks worth of laundry in and let er rip though.

I can never understand over designed appliances with stainless steel finishes that are riddled with computers that you can check your facebook on or whatever they do now.

We just got Speedqueen washer and dryer. We have heard nothing but outstanding things about them. Sure they dont look as "cool" as some front loaders but who gives a damn. I dont want to ever have to buy another set.

RIght, but women. Especially upper middle class white women.

You can, if you look hard enough, find a BASIC machien that just washes clothes and doesn't make a cappuccino, but, they all look like they were made in communist romania.

That's all said women see, nothing else matters to them.

What we want is an f80 exterior with a camry drivetrain and electronics but it doesn't exist. You gotta just buy the camry but women don't wanna do that.

Still rocking a basic top loader Maytag washer and the matching dryer when I bought this house new 20 years ago. No issues what so ever except that some of the plastic parts are showing age issues...such as the hinge for the door on the top loader. I also have a very basic GE top loader washer with matching dryer at my vacation home that's coming up on 10 years. The washer has been a bit suspect at times with how well it washes clothes but it still runs.

The thing with these front loaders as some have pointed out is the complexity of the electronics which will inevitably break. Aside from the standing water issue, they don't wash as well by design. They use less water per load than a top loader but the problem is you have to run the load through again with a front loader to get your clothes as clean as a top loader.

If any either of my washers break, it'll be another basic top loader for me.

Google your make/model and find the YouTube repair videos for the issue. Mechanical issues are pretty easy to DIY; electronics are easy repairs but harder to properly diagnose. I was able to replace the front door seal on a washer using the videos and on-line purchased parts. Belts are super easy. This is a good start: https://www.appliancepartspros.com/b...ading-washers/

The belt failing is perhaps indicative of a deeper issue, as it would be on a car (part seized, belt self destructs). So be sure to look for something impeding the smooth operation of whatever the belt attaches to.

We had Samsung vintage 2011 and they lasted until we moved enough distance (800 miles) to be concerned about the cost of moving them vs the risk of damage/failure. Just two of us, so only 1-3 loads per week. Bought GE at Lowes here after shopping and talking a bit, mainly about what machines come back for repair and warranty work. That was a year ago; so things may have changed (including availability).

If it's a Whirlpool/Sears, then the plastic ratchet pawls have broken. About $6 online & 5 minutes work.
