Although Mel definitely sounds looney, she was recording this and probably portraying herself a certain way knowing that she could use the recording. Maybe just egging him on in subtle ways to set him off a little more, or saying things on purpose to portray herself in a better way.

In the end, he's still a loon, but who knows the whole story between them.

Exactly. I don't really want to side with either in this situation. Gibs sounded like the devil incarnate right there, but she was obviously pushing his buttons and most likely pulling off the perfect nice girl voice while recording that convo.
