There are a lot of great ETFs for long or short on gold/silver, have played with them in the past, pretty sure they have Ultra versions for 2x exposure. Also had made some $ with stocks like Harmony gold & First Majestic Silver. Haven't been following metals to much past few years to play with them again.

I keep physical gold and silver though it is a tiny portion of my assets.

Not looking to hold a large position but the idea of holding physical gold or silver seems attractive especially if the SHTF lol

How much is a little bit, by %?

Assuming the SHTF, how do you trade 1oz gold bullion for a loaf of bread? I'd want to have much smaller denominations.

I'm curious what your definition of SHTF is? Because in my SHTF scenario the only things that would be worth anything is probably food, guns, ammo.

This is exactly why I was thinking silver. 1oz is just over $20.

Check, check, check. But let's say you aren't growing or have something you want or need and don't have something else to trade besides time with your wife....having some metals might avoid that unpleasantness.

I could see that maybe some time after the SHTF. However I'm not sure that would be the case for a while. I mean you literally can't do anything with a chunk of gold or silver. I has no intrinsic value other than the fact it is worth $$. If $$ goes away I would imagine any value it had also goes away. So why would anyone trade food, guns etc for a chunk of metal they can't do anything with?

Honestly makes no difference to me because I know I'm not cut out for the apocalypse. I can only hope I get taken out at the start.

^agree^ that gold or silver as a means of exchange for essential goods is zero in an Armageddon scenario.

The only precious metal that has value if the SHTF is lead. Cast lead, generally cylindrical.

All of the above covered including the lead. As for % of assets, less than 1%.

I'd want to be holding onto two or three bricks of Benjamins, too.

I'd guess in the hypothetical SHTF scenario that the value of precious metals would fall substantially. That's what generally happens when a commodity floods the market.

Speaking of silver at $20, I sold out when it hit that target price of mine in 2008. I rolled it into the major tech stocks, which went on to fund my race car habit. Win-win.

In my SHTF scenario, lead and brass will be the new currency. With enough of those things, obtaining anything else should be trivial.....

Don't forget powder, primers, and barrel cleaning gear!

I buy it by the case.

I have been planning on buying a ton of 1g & 2g gold coins next time I go to India, have a few but want a stash. Plenty of 23k things in the house including an ounce on my wrist which with some wire cutters becomes 1.5g nuggets.

I think 10k in cash and 10k in gold silver is a good goal. If SHTF really bad what good is crypto if there's no internet or power.

A serious question: If I were to travel to Ukraine, or Gaza, with tiny bits of gold in my pocket, could I get some of those essentials for living right now? S pretty much HTF in those places.

I have plenty of lead, some fruit trees, and chickens in my back yard. Not enough to sustain us very long if I can't trade some little nuggets for some chicken feed though.

Trade it to the suckers who think things might return to normal. Silver for werewolves and I think gold is effective against zombies.

Pretty sure the pilgrims gave some shitty beads to the natives for Massachusetts or at least Cape Cod, imagine what you could get with something of real value...

That was the Dutch (represented by Henry Hudson), the beads and trinkets were worth $24 (in which year's dollars, I don't know), and the land was Manhattan, the value of which, like so much else, depends upon where you're standing.

Alas, the $24 worth of beads and trinkets part of that story isn't true, but the legend lives on!
