Ughhh! New CTS weighs in over 4000 lbs
Man, this laugh is on me
I had hoped GM would actually improve on the prior CTS-V with a nice interior and elimination of the wheel hop, but C&D has the regular CTS tipping the scales at over 4000 lbs. It is no wonder they will need 525-600HP... |

what is with this trend of 600hp, 4000+ lb monsters. just give a 2900lb car 300hp and it will be just as fast. car makers these days are retarded. i'm not buying another car till this fatass weight trend starts reversing.

Ya Motor Trend compares the CTS to the 5 series.

This thread didn't make any sense to me so I just googled the 2008 CTS curb weight and it says that the manual is 3509lbs and the AT is 3568lbs. Thats lighter than an e90's weight according to BMW. The car is receiving great reviews so far, supposedly its the best Cadillac sedan in 50 years. I'm sure its chassis dynamics won't match the 3 series but the entire car, i.e. gearing, steering, suspension was tuned at the nurburgring so it has to handle decently. GM did an excellent job with the c6 z06 on the ring so it can be done. Now with the ls7 under the hood that thing is sure to be a monster.

Yes, your right........that is not true. I believe the CTS will be an amazing car for the amount of luxury, power, and affordability. Plus it also gives me a chance to consider buying american for once! I've been wanting to do that for a long time now |

Thats because BMW is spending A LOT of money on lighter metals for the engine....something they can do because the M3 will not be cheap.
Spend that kind of money to make a V8 lighter in an average american car, and the price will sky rocket. |

Here's the link: http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtest...ts.html?al=123 "Initially, it was surprising that the new Caddy is just a 10th quicker through the quarter than its big-brother STS with the same engine (but with the six-speed automatic tranny) until we plopped our CTS onto the scales: 4032 pounds, no thanks to the nearly 100-pound penalty of the optional sunroof. That’s 252 more than the outgoing model and just 68 shy of the five-inch-longer STS." |

It looks pretty nice to me. The interior looks really good and I like the exterior lines. If it drives as nicely as C&D says, I would definitely buy the 6-cylinder CTS over a G35 or IS350 (the G35 does absolutely nothing for me and the IS is too small inside). The stated curb weight is getting out of hand, though, and is one reason that even the new CTS-V likely won't make me want to give up my 335i.

Ditto -- my buddy sent me the C/D link, and my comment back to him was "too bad the damn thing weighs two tons". I think BMW is on the right track -- lighten the car first, and you don't have to worry about cramming in more motor.

there are quite a few american vehicles already using aluminum block V8's, and I bet a decent amount of them are lighter than the M3's I6 |

I'm not here to defend the weight of the CTS - it's definitely porky at 4000+ lbs... That being said, it is within an inch of the 5-series on pretty much every dimension, so comparing it to the 3-series (which is an entire foot shorter) really isn't fair. Unfortunately it's still a couple of hundred pounds heavier than an I6 equipped 5-series as well. Sadly, something tells me they weren't too focused on weight with the CTS. It looks like they were more worried about bang for the buck and offering a car the size of a 5-series for the price of a 3-series. Not so much an enthusiast car, but more of a mainstream option...
If GM wanted to build a lighter car, they certainly could have... Just look at my Z06 which weighs in at just over 3130 lbs and has a 505HP V8 that tips the scales at just 458 lbs. I doubt there are many 500HP+ normally aspirated production motors that come in so light

You can see pics of the new 4LT interior here: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-chevrolet-corvette/
It's definitely an improvement... Only problem is you spend $8K on the 4LT package (which includes pretty much everything else) to get it... Not a problem for me (I have a 2LZ Z06), but not much choice for people who only want the upgraded interior.
