Late 80s Porsche 911 pricing

I know there's a lot of cross-pollination between BMW and Porsche fans, so I'm wondering if anyone here would know about this.

My boss has a 1987 Carrera that he enjoys. He said today that he's thinking of selling it, as prices have DOUBLED in the past six months. I couldn't believe that, but after checking out the Hagerty price guide, it looks like it's true!

What could have happened in the past few months to increase the value of these cars so much?

Yes, Porsche prices are through the roof right now. It is a bubble and it will burst eventually.

There absolutely is a bubble in the used Porsche market right now and like all bubbles, they will eventually burst. As much as I despise current Porsches, a clean 993 or older Porsche is simply a stunning sight and they are commanding a much higher price than a year ago (I'd say it has more than doubled). And if you think that's insane...check market value on a 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0. Keep in mind they were $190K new.
totally agreed about the bubble. even mediocre 911s are selling for markely increased prices from 1-2 years ago. I think the prices will come down in a year or two back down to more normal levels.

this is largely in part to the idea that the 911, as you mentioned, has become WAY too refined now and people are going back to the prior models. The same can be seen for BMWs i think----where the new cars are more techie and less direct than their prior counterparts.

997.2 GT3 and GT3 RS are going for more than when they were new. Realization that there are no more manual tranny versions of these cars is leaving people worrying and clamoring for what they can buy, driving up prices.

Maybe the RS, not the regular GT3.

The 991 is a better car, but is it a better 911? That is debatable with no right or wrong answer. Enthusiasts however take note that the prices are getting a bit ridiculous. Ok, they already were ridiculous, now they border on ludicrous (try to price out a basic 911 for < 100K with a few options. ).

The joy of a simple air cooled p-car can not be replicated without going back in time.

993's have held their value for a while. I briefly looked at them but instead we decided on a base somewhat stripped Cayman a few years back (wife's DD). Could not justify the price delta and despite haters, the mid engine car is more playful hands down

Even prices for the 92 Camaro have gone up quite a bit too......just saying. It seems like a lot of vehicles are jumping up in prices for some odd reason......

A '67 Mustang GT has nearly doubled as well.
