Hit a hard bump now clunking noises

My current setup e92 lci stock shocks and h&r race springs. I actually just ordered coilovers because I can't stand the way it rides. Bottoms out everywhere!!!

Anyway I was driving last night in some construction and just when I thought the roads cleared up I hit a patch of unpaved road going about 70mph. Both washer caps from the bumper flew off, and now I have a rattling clunking sound at low speeds through rough terrain. It seems to be coming from behind the dash/firewall area. It's not 100% consistent with shock movement. Meaning it only makes noise when I hit bumps but it doesn't always make noise following bump movement, nor if I hit bumps at higher speeds. Sounds like something is loose but car drives fine. It's not a light rattle, more of a heavy clunking clanking noise. Has this happened to anyone!?

I'll be taking a look when I change to the coilovers but I was thinking maybe it's a common problem here and I could buy the parts before I put the car on the lift. Any info would be great.

Thanks!

Where are the noise coming from? There are a million things that you could have shaken loose in the car.

When you change out the OEM springs with shorter aftermarket ones it kill the shocks. Maybe thats the problem

Noise is coming from firewall area or at least it sounds like it. It's starting to creak and rattle as well. I might have to park it until I receive the suspension. Doesn't sound too good

Are the sway arm end links intact? Might've lost one.

thanks for the suggestions

After replacing and upgrading to coilovers, new adjustable sway bar links, camber plates, and tightening every bolt I could the noise was still there. I read on a z4 thread about loose sway bar bolt but on the firewall side. Ended up that mine back out almost completely so the bars were tapping the firewall mount.

so if you have a tapping, popping, creaking noise that sounds like its coming from the center of your dash but also gets louder with bumps, check that out!

Pop your hood and check if there's play in your steering shaft. The sound would be coming from the same area as you described.

I had a clunk; there was a lot of play in one of the shaft knuckles. Replaced it and the clunk was gone.

check your upper strut bar going from the strut tower to the firewall. This happens all to much, one of the bolts gets loose at the firewall side and makes a god awful knocking noise.

So I'm guessing this is a known issue ? I had a weird noise and when my mechanic checked everything under the car, he said everything is perfect so I'm guessing it could be that thing ?
