have you still not learned that the "boycott" for one day is going to help gas prices about as much as you writing a nice letter in crayon to the owner of exxon asking for better prices?

your shiny happy world of online petitions and B.S. boycotts have ZERO connection to the real world.

you kids really need to take an economics class, maybe even take it 3 or 4 times to make sure you finally get it drilled into your skull how stupid a one day boycott is.

if you have a degree in economics you of all people should know that delaying a large company from realizing it's profit's for one day has ZERO effect if the company just gets more profit in the days following and before the boycott.
it's basically the same effect as if your boss gave you your paycheck one day late.

economics isn't about feelings, it's about money. If you really want to stick it to the man get yourself and everyone else to use way less gas (good luck with that BTW )

yeah, you said it would make a point and make them think a little

what point would it make? how does that make them stop and think about what they're doing (which I don't think is wrong BTW)?

the point it makes is that we're going to give you the same amount of money, but we're just going to make you wait a day for it.

like I said before, if everyone followed the boycott (which they won't) it's just the same as your paycheck being delayed a day, but being the same amount.

we need less smiley happy attempts at making a useless point, just to make ourselfs feel like we're helping a situation that we have no control over.

Used to be such a wonderful country

O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen thro’ the mist of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream
’Tis the star-spangled banner. Oh! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation,
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God We Trust"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave

I wish I can hedge (or have balls of steel) to hedge.
You have the right concept here, but a little off. The scenario you describe is like if I was the owner of a large fleet of vehicles that consume gasoline on a regular bases and want to protect my business from higher gas prices, I would want to buy "Calls" of gasoline futures options; such that as gasoline increase in price, the money I make in the Call option will offset the loss of the additional dollars I have to pay at the pump for my fleet.

The second scenario is if I decided to invest in Exxon/Mobil (XOM) and already have 100 shares in my account. I would like to keep my shares but feel uneasy about the current conditions and would like to hedge my 100 shares. I would then go Buy a "Put" option such that if XOM drops in price, the money I make in the Put option will offset the loss in the underlying stock.

Everyone, if you are a novice, do not consider options in any scenario...trust me on this...You may however, consider using Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). I've traded ETFs since their inception...I'm glad to help members here.

This is the protest day, right? Today I'm driving my wife's old car that gets 38 MPG. I'm going to sell it. Asking price $2500.

Cool, yes that is how I understood it but could not explain it as well as you. It is obvious that you are not a novice at this . Yes, I also agreed that it is not for the faint of hearts. Ppl who hedge have done this a while and they also have attented seminars and read publications.

If I was the gas company, I'd raise my prices for tomorrow just to show everyone who the boss really is.

man, look what we did. Yesterday, word on the street say dont pump gas. today, gas price jumped because they know some folks who did not pump yesterday will need to pump today or the rest of the week

So does it really work in our favor
