I love BMW's performance diesels the tourque is just awesome... I testdrove the 535d and boy that changed my mind about all diesels.. they're awesome. After that I testdrove the 320d and I absolutley loved it aswell! It feels very quick due to the nice tourqe. I was really into getting the 320d until I testdrove the 325i (which is the same price over here!) oh man that 6 cylinder engine sure is one fun machine to drive!!! But if they realese a 325d I dont know.. coz I'd rather have a 320d than a 320i... We'll see, the big diesels are awesome, and you can chiptune them easlily so why a diesel? If you like tourqe, lower fuel consumption and 80-120 km/h racing, go for it!

I compared the two engines last week. I was going to post my comparison in this thread, but my reply got a bit long. So I put it in a new thread here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17573

"Le plaisir de conduire" with an engine note that sounds like someone is making popcorn under the hood is a new concept to me.
Have a lot of BMW diesel engines in South Dakota do they?

As I mentioned before, I bought my diesel strictly for performance reasons and have not been disappointed since. Maybe some of the doubting petrol heads (including those with 330i's) would like to test their theories against my 535d? I have nothing to lose, it's a diesel right?

I have also tested the 120d and 320d. For some reason, the 320d was stronger IMO, but neither one really pleased me from a performance perspective. However, I would buy either one before a comparably priced 116i-120i or 320i.

Newton-meter:
A unit of the meter-kilogram-second system equal to the energy expended, or work done, by a force of one newton acting through a distance of one meter and equal to one joule.

335td 560Nm = 412 ft/lbs torque

Compare to 330i w/ 220 ft/lbs torque

Translation: the 335td will have awesome low and mid range acceleration, whereas the 330 & 335t have awesome high rev acceleration.

Part of the difference is, for want of a better term, 'visceral aesthetics.' We are trained by our experiences to be thrilled by a pattern of stimuli. The inline 6 petrol engine provides an exceptional stimulus symphony, the combination of sound, increasing acceleration with higher revs -- building towards redline climax. Diesels provide a different pattern of stimuli. Less of a building acceleration, and a different sound pattern, but tremendous sucked into the back of your seat pull on command. Diesels are akin to listening to Bach or Beethoven; petrols are more like Mozart or Eric Clapton. Both are great in my book; BMW has developed the diesels into as fine a mechanical instrument as the petrol engines, they are just different.

We are not as lucky as they guys living in U.S.If I want to drive a 3.30İ I have to pay nearly 130.000 Dollars because of tax issues and of course consumption,1 liter of petrol is 2,1 U.S, this is the reason why we drive diesel engines.I paid 80.000 for my 3.20 D and test both 3.20i and D,feel that diesel is more powerful because of its torque,it is also approved by BMW too.

In EU we pay taxes for all. My 320d has got a final price of 56 thousand EUR and the gas is over 1.2 EUR/ liter.
The birth of US was sustained by a rebellion against tea taxes and in US the system is free of taxes everywhere. In EU its because the fiscal system of the monarchy is heavy and where the monarchy was overthrown the system was not. So we pay 2 cars when we buy one and we pay 3 litres of gas for one. Its not only luck its the way we choose in elections ???

We had a `04 VW Jetta TDI wagon which was great on fuel. We racked up 40k miles in 15 months! Even with the automatic it would get 43-45mpg on the freeway and 33-35 mpg in the city. We just sold it about 2 months ago and while the Jetta itself was nothing special the engine was entertaining even for being the older SOHC design and didn't utilize new technology such as common rail which creates a smoother/quieter engine. It had a small variable vane turbo that would create boost very quickly so by 1800 rpms there was already 177 lbs. ft. of torque, not bad for a 1.9 liter 4 banger. Best of all we were able to sell that car for $1,000 more than we bought it for after those 15 months since the demand for a diesel wagon is pretty high in CA.

I would be very interested in a diesel BMW like a 320D or 330D, in wagon form especially. The downsides to a diesel is heavier engine which makes the front end a bit heavier and not as emotion packed as a high winding gas engine. I say have the best of both worlds and have a diesel for the daily driver and some fun gas engine car for the weekends.
