Question Is the R8 a safe vehicle for a 3 year old in booster seat to ride? Any fathers?

Maybe some of you can chime in here since I'm sure many are fathers and we all love sports cars

I posted this on R8 forum and wanted to see the general thoughts if this is doable:

So I'm talking to my wife and debating over this last night since it's really a grey area. Can the R8 front airbag be disabled?

Our little girl is 3 now and she loves fast cars but for the most part she never rides in our 2-door sport cars currently. Always back seat in a child seat. Most fun she gets is in my M3 sedan right now. My friend says a 3 year old can be in a booster seat up front, my question is are there any dad's here who does this and do the baby seats fit safely?

We own a total of 5 baby seats so I'm hoping one of them will fit correctly but ultimately is it safe?

Dad's chime in here please!

Right now all my 2-seater cars stay home on weekdays because I have to pick up my daughter from daycare each night ~ it would be really nice if she can ride in the R8 safely as it would give me one more option.

thanks!

A three year old doesn't need to go fast in your sports car, daddy.

+1

Is this for real? A 3yo def does not belong in the front seat at all, let alone going fast in an R8.

Sit her in the seat and check to see if it is disabled. If she's too light (which she should be) the sensor will disable the airbag if it is a feature. I suspect being a fairly recent car that the air bag can be disabled

Agreed. No offense, but I would think you would be asking what is safest car to transport your daughter. Get a large SUV or something like that. Jump in the R8 and have your fun after you drop her off.

thanks for the replies!

Hardly going fast ~ it's roughly 5 miles of local driving at 35-40mph from our home to the daycare. I NEVER speed when I have my family with me. This was just a simple question of being able to transport her using the R8.

Quite a few NSX owners take their toddlers in the front seat so it's not something so far out there. I think taking kids on motorcycles are way more dangerous but you see it all the time. (something I won't do)

I'll check with Audi dealer what is the weight threshold to trigger the airbag sensor.

thanks again

P.S. this does not have to be an Audi, any 2-door modern sports car like the Z8, Corvette, etc. Just seeing what other dads have done

You live in California, there are laws about putting a child in the front seat. I highly doubt your 3 year old kid fits the bill quite yet.

In NY a child cannot sit in the front seat of a two row vehicle till they are 13.This law does not apply to single seat pick ups IIRC.

Here in California, a child cannot sit in the front seat until they are a)8 years old or b)until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches in height.

Putting a 3 year old into the tight front seat of a lowered, high performance sports car is not only illegal here in CA, but it's ridiculously careless. An air bag deployment would probably knock the kid out, or outright kill them. I can't believe any father would consider doing it. This guy's friend is a complete idiot for even suggesting it.

Check your state laws regarding toddlers/infants in front seats.

This is from the California CHP site:
http://www.chp.ca.gov/community/chil...seat_faqs.html

California's New Child Passenger Safety Law effective January 1, 2012

California Law will require children to ride in the back seat in a properly secured child passenger safety restraint until they are at least 8 years old or until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches in height.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why was the law revised?
Children are at greater risk when riding in the front seat. A child's injury risk is reduced by 33% when moved from the front seat to the back seat.

Are there exemptions?
Yes, there are a few. Your child may ride in the front seat if:
Your vehicle has no rear seats
Rear seats are side-facing jump seats.
Child safety restraints must never be placed on side-facing vehicle seats.
The child restraint system cannot be properly installed in the rear seat.
For example, your vehicle has lap belts only in the back seat, but there are lap and shoulder belts in the front seat. Your child is 5 and weighs 45 pounds and must ride in a booster seat. The booster seat must be used with a lap and shoulder belt; therefore your child may ride in the front seat.
Children under age 12 occupy all rear seats.
Medical reason (written by the pediatrician) requires that child not be restrained in the back seat. All children are safer in the back seat, ask another adult to ride with the child in the back.

Name calling is cool, this just goes to show you how views can differ so drastically. I have not done it, merely asking a question here. I'm actually against the idea but wanted to know what others have done. It's obvious where you stand.

Parenting is like religion and politics so please do not assume your view is the only correct one here.
