Windscreen cracked, any tips for replacement?

I have returned from holidays and noticed that my windscreen cracked. I remember a stone hitting it 2 days ago but it was ok. It cracked today and still spreading. I was thinking about calling my insurer but I'm not sure if they would replace the cheapest windscreen. How about all other stuff attached to it? Auto wipers, auto lights, connected drive etc.
I was thinking about going directly to BMW to make sure the correct windscreen would be fitted in the right way.
Any tips how to do it?
Thanks.

There is a thread on this some place, basically you can spec the grey band instead of standard and they fit it.

How about all the sensors? I have also the adaptive lights as well as connected drive. Does it work fine after replacement?

Same thing happened to my windscreen last June. When I phoned my insurance company (Hastings), At first I was told that they will be replacing it with a generic windscreen screen. Which means anything but OEM BMW. I was given a number to call which was AutoWindscreen. Spoken to a very nice lady and explained that my car is less than a year old and it has all the auto everything with it, so i need an original BMW windscreen otherwise BMW will void the warranty if something goes wrong. Got a call back that my Insurer authorised it.

Original BMW (pilkington)for £75.

It's worth a try.

Make sure the correct spacers are used, and that the expanding foam is replaced.

Autoglass bought out a non OEM screen to fit to my car. I said they could fit it as it was a Pilkington one, same company who make BMW glass.

The fitter then said he couldn't as my insurance company insisted on OEM only, so had to wait 3 weeks for a BMW screen to come in.

The two screens looked identical.

You can insist that the insurance company sends the Car to BMW for replacement. But be prepared to pay the difference between Autoglass and Dealer prices.

Don't get an oem screen, they're absolute crap! After 2 and a half months and 5k miles it had 2 stone chips and that huge crack!

My non oem Sekurit screen has been in for 3 months and 6k miles and doesn't have a single bit of damage on it!

It depends on the glass. Had mine done on e90 in september. Told autoglass it was a thermal windscreen and a saintgobain one arrived non BMW first I thought as had no BMW logo. Checked on friends car which has OEM one and literally it was same just extra BMW logo on his.
It depends who has the contract to make that models range glass if rest of your glass is for example pilkinton and windscreen arrives pilkinton its same glass they just etch BMW when it goes to factory order.

I noticed on some glass on VAG cars you get a black square where the brand is thats usually where the brand logo goes and has been etchd over as its replacement. Totally agree avoid cheap China special as they are called replacements. But if a main brand screen its going to be made for same level as a dealer one especially if makes match up.

I'm on 3rd screen....all Pilkington so far.

I questioned Autoglass, one of the fitters said he thought the F30 glass was thinner than typical.....the second fitter and the Autoglass manager both said that this idea was rubbish. The Autoglass manager said there are windscreen standards, and it would have to comply with those at the very minimum. His thoughts...He said it was a classic stressed screen, and any stones hitting near the edge would be capable of cracking it. Pot luck.

I saw one of the stones hit and instantly cause a 4 inch Y shaped crack. The stone wasn't even big.

Would be good if Saint Gobain was any better.

I would say doubt it. mine was marked from the wipers very quickly. Fact of the world everybody is pushing limits what they can get away to keep costs down. Result quality suffers

I would think it's pot luck if it was just my experience, but as a few others on here have also had more problems with their F30 screen than their previous cars it makes me wonder if there's more to it than luck. :

No I agree, I do the same mileage every year, and never had 3 windscreens in one year. That is more than a coincidence. What I think he is saying, is that this screen is more stressed for whatever reason, so takes less to crack it.

Maybe it could just be down to cash strapped councils not maintaining the roads as much as they used to and there are more loose chippings and stones from cracks and pot holes on the roads, waiting to be hurled around by cars driving over them?

Probably just trying too hard, thinking out of the box....

Called Autoglass. They said they would use exactly the same BMW windscreen but before BMW stamped it. It has to be one according my car spec. I don't know if to accept it or call my insurer to aprove BMW one. I will try tomorrow.
About the windscreen itself - in my E92 several stones hit it, one even so huge I saw it flying and Nothing really happened. Not even a stone chip seen at all after 4 years. Now the first stone made a mark easily seen, the second one hit the edge and made quite a lot of damage and the windscreen cracked a day later. Is there anything wrong with these windscreens?
Not to mention that it is my first windscreen cracked in 17 years.
