Make sure you get her hips checked, as well as her lineage.

GSD's have problems with being so inbred they develop hip problems later in life.

that.

Supposedly the bigger the GS, the more likely this is. Ours was the biggest of the litter and was showing some signs of hip dysplasia, but the vet said it should get better as he gets older, just dont run him hard or let him jump; that sort of thing.

Labs are the same way, from what I have heard though, if the Lab is a AKC purebred the chances of hip problems decreases dramatically for labs.

unless the dog is jumping off decks and high places they will be fine. "running hard" is what they are supposed to do. letting these dogs just sit and not get any exercise will cause them to get hip problems. xena has been x-rayed and she will be every year. her pedigree is clean of hip problems

not running hard =/= just sitting all day.

If your GF or wife doesn't like big dogs, but you want a GS, then just start bigger. My last dog was a Saint. Bernard That weighed in at 245 lbs. So a German Shepherd was a nice compromise

She just turned three this month, but this picture is from when she was about two.

We got our GS as a rescure case. Greatest dogs ever! My Mom went to a job site to do some measurements (flooring industry) after Hurricane Katrina and she found Caida lying under a junk car just shaking. Caida weighted 45lbs and was heartworm positive. Caida is now over 90lbs and heartworm neg. She roams on 20 acres chasing the horses all day.

Funny story, my cousin goes to school at Rhodes but comes home on holidays. He drove in late one night and came inside the house. My Aunt woke up to screaming. Ran into the kitchen to find Allen up on top of the counters because Caida thought he was an intruder.

That sounds familiar. I found our maid in the same spot when she came on a different day than normal but she didn't get on the counter until he had already taken a chunk out of her leg. She makes sure to knock now before using her key to enter unannounced.
