Best "medium priced" video camera for a noob?

This isn't for me. A friend has a new daughter and wants to get into video, which I haven't thought seriously about in years. Is there a reasonably priced, non-dslr, video camera that'll allow 1080p, good sound and ease of use for a casual user?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I got a JVC Everio camera and really have nothing bad to say about it.

It cheap (+/- $300), works with SD and got very great sound and image. There's also a one click button for youtube uploads which I dont use, but can be very cool when setup properly as private videos that people cant find even if they search for it. So you can send them only to family and relatives.

I suggest getting extra batteries on ebay tho. They go for cheap and a fully charged battery doesnt last 10 hours.

I only ever owned jvc cameras in my life and never got disapointed with any.

I would say anything Canon. I've used their camcorder products a few times and really like their built-in features (such as stabilization, which you can actually walk with and have it look as if you're on a steadicam).
