rear diff and manual trans fluid advice please
next weekend i plan to install my new clutch,i have seen so many people on here use diff fluids. can someone chime in on whats the more recommended? it gets cold here, but i don't drive it really in the winter and more of a summer car so i should get thicker stuff right? everyone keeps talking about redline, can someone tell me which one and should i use oem or redline for the rear diff. ALSO, how much do i need for both. I have no idea on this and is there any other fluid i should change while under there? thanks!

Search is your friend: quite a few write ups. Rear end runs a 75/90 gear oil, plenty to chose from. I use Redline myself, about $16 a qt. Did it on my 44K 335d last weekend and the OEM fluid while not completely rancid was certainly ready for a change given what was suspended in it.
I do not know off hand the spec of the MT fluid for E90s: this is slightly different then rear end gear oil (there is MTL85, MT90, also 75/90NS for some transmissions as its a GL5 based oil. MTs are a tradeoff between better wear protection and 'slicker' feel. Lifetime fluid my ass Deutchland...change it regularly, care for your car. - b |

There's a recent post about 10 posts down from this one.
For manual trans redline d6atf is the equivalent, I used d4atf, and some use mtf. Research which to use for your climate.

Found it lol. So it get around 80-90 in the summer here and I won't drive this car in the winter, that being said do you think mtf is the way to go?

My Indy put Rotra LSX 75w90 in my transmission.
Cold shifting is HARD. Once warm, you feel the shifts in the transmission more but it seems to work well. |

75w90 redline for the diff (1.1 qt for 328i). MTL for the trans (1.6 qt), needs to warm up a bit when cold (below 40), but better lubrication than ATF.

I put in BMW OEM oil for the manual transmission. Shifts like normal and works fine on start-up even on cold winter days here in NorCal. I had redline MTF in my civic when I use to live in Hawaii, it was noticably bad on start up even in Hawaii where it doesn't get cold. I don't care that it felt fine once warmed up. I am more concerned with WTF it is doing to my transmission until it warms up. My guess is, it's not lubricating. I will stick to OEM here or at the very least, a fluid that feels smooth even on start-up.
For the diff, I am putting in Motul 75w90. |
