Always back in a sports car?

I've got a friend that says you "always have to back in a sports car" in a parking lot. Anyone else hear this "rule" before?

Maybe. But then again you should tell your friend that you have a sporty coupe at best and no where near a true "sports car"

Not my car. Just in general. I prefer to pull in front first to parking spots.

sorry to burst your bubble but i have a bmw. And if you consider a 335 a sports car, you must have not driven many cars in your time.

Our cars are maybe a sporty coupe at best.

Low? Not particularly.
Small? Not even close.
2 passenger? Nope.
Quick response? Have you checked our steering ration lately? Nadda.
Maneuverability in a car that weighs 3600 pounds? No again.
High speed driving, yes.
1/6 does not constitute a sports car. Stop deluding yourself, a 3er is a sporty car at best, not a sports car.

OP: I've never pulled head in to a parking space that I could back into. i.e. unless they're tilted so that you have to swing over 90 degrees to back in, I always back in.

let's talk about the car in the picture.

low? looks pretty low to me
small? hell yeah
2 passenger? more like 1 and a half
quick response? i didn't check the ratio but i bet it can outmaneuver 911 in the Safeway parking lot
maneuverability in a car that weighs "1600lbs"? not again
high speed driving? probably not, unless being towed by gallardo

so... for smartfortwo, 5 out of 6 makes a better sport car than our 3 series?

i would agree that anybody who think 3 series is on par with 911 is delusional. just as delusional are those who think 3 series is a mere SPORTY coupe. SPORTY coupe is the word reserved for the likes of Mitsu Eclipse or Hyundai Tibu...whatever the name is - that are based on econobox FF.

3 series is the sport coupe at its finest, and it easily beats at least half of the car that are claiming to be a legit sport car. and it's got the back seat and the trunk.

what more can i possibly want?

(okay...maybe a lower engine temp, better oil cooler, better REGULAR tires, more reliable electronics, and so on and so on...)

I'm assuming you're friend is suggesting this because the car is much higher in the back and you'll scrape in the front.
I usually try to back in because i don't want my front lip getting destroyed on the curb or parking block. . .

quick response? i didn't check the ratio but i bet it can outmaneuver 911 in the Safeway parking lot what about the throttle? it gets up and goes when you get on it? How's that 13+ second 0-60 time?
maneuverability in a car that weighs "1600lbs"? not again it gets .72g's on a skidpad, that's pathetic
high speed driving? probably not, unless being towed by gallardo 90 mph max lol

so... for smartfortwo, 5 out of 6 makes a better sport car than our 3 series? I count 2 out of 6

Actually the term "Sports Car" is VERY general and generic. When you have specifications in mind for comparison, you are on a more specific class...like Indy car, NASCAR, Formula.....What are you using?

There is no hard definition, I merely used the one he linked to prove him wrong, I disagree with the definition he linked. It's not a "pure" sports car if the engine is in front of the driver, there, I said it. The ZR-1 and GTR are not sports cars, nor is the 599. At least the 599 admits it's a GT, the other two are just rejects.

I dont think BMW really makes a true sports car. Lots of sport sedans, in fact many would argue they originated the market. But a TRUE sports car? No way. When I think sports car I think light, nimble and fast, in that order. A 3'er is hardly light or nimble. There aren't many true sports cars around these days - most are too heavy. IMHO anyway.

And just becuase your e92 isn't technically a sedan, it's no sports car either. It's a sedan with 2 doors.

I guess I am waiting for you to prove anything. Like the other person said, it is a general term just like the REAL definition states.

I really don't care either way. But when the second poster attacked the OP for using "sports car" when he posted his question, it set me off.

BTW it says usually 2-passenger.

Most 'sports cars' like the Lotus Elise are easily beat out by so-called GTs like the 599 or the GTR, so sports car doesn't necessarily denote speed, does it?

Everyone's definition of a sports car is different... However, our 3ers are not sports cars by any standards

Also no a sports car does not have to have a ridiculous amount of power. IMO, it's more about the feel of the car
