I agree, I had a GMT, but sold it quickly. Rolex is sort of the gold Camry of the watch world, but I wouldn't mind a Sea Dweller or a non-date Sub.

Rolex and Panerai are also good watches, but I do think you pay higher prices to support their marketing efforts. At those price points (above $5,000) you get a better watch if you look at IWC or Zenith.
Who said they were??

I have 3 Breitling's too.

There are definitely some Tag watches worth owning.

A carbon-faced Carrera chrono day-date and the chrono Monaco would be worth buying.

Just felt compelled to lift Tag up above Movado here that's all.

I didn't realize they could hold value so well despite being a pre-owned. Question, which one will hold the value vs. fall. Or do they all hold relative value?

I might look at a Radomir since it's bit more reserve and thinner to work with suits and such. The Luminor Base versions are quite thick

Very good way of looking at it and something I'll remember when I'm trying some on. I want something afficionados would pick but isn't gaudy, but the average person may be intrigued enough to ask, - "nice watch, what is that?" but not think I'm blingin' it. Just saying that out loud, that might make me vere away from a Rolex, which is certainly a universal symbol - "look, I have money, and I spent on this symbol for people with money " haha...Panerai is less so IMHO because not many people outside the watch world know what it is and the ones that do are more likely afficionados I think - maybe I'm wrong, but that's my perception.

Here is a price list so you know what to expect if you make a visit to an AD to look at them.

http://www.paneristi.com/reference/p...List_2010.html

Not all dealers will have all watches, so if there is one that you want to see in particular you should call first.

You are correct, Sir! The new one has different casings. Mine is the 16710 (GMT2) which i bought it brand new back in 03 if my memory serves me good.. It's a tough watch I agree with you... it takes a licking and still ticking anything from shocks countless shooting range to bumps and scrapes from many overseas travels, etc

Had a 16610 and 14270 on top of 16710.. I figured the later, 16710, with its multiple timezone ability serves me better than the first two, so I sold them...

When I got my Sub, I looked at the newer larger case models as well. The newer cases just don't flow as well into the bracelet, more bulky without really making the watch look that much bigger. The ceramic bezels are nice.

Older Subs hold their value well, the going rate today is a few hundred more than I paid for mine.

I Love my stainless date sub! I wear it daily, and haven't found a watch I want more to date.

Super nice watches I'd probably tend to covet and worry about and not wear.

I recently bought myself a Seiko Orange Monster that I enjoy wearing, but I love my Sub way more.

Rolex's and Pan's in the $5k - $8k range will hold their value pretty well. If you buy second hand, which i would recommend, make sure you get the full kit (box, matching paperwork, warranty card etc.) It's worth paying extra for that and only buy from reputable people.

watches above $10k, other than a Daytona, will depreciate more. Heck, anything over $20k you can pretty much buy for 50-60% retail, brand new with papers in the grey market. And there is a very well established and trustworthy grey market for high end watches out there. I forget what the network is called but there is an international watch wholesaler network, of which may authorized Rolex, Omega, Pan retailers are a part.

For example, if you search WUS you can find 'favoured dealers' who will pm you there info... problem is that the OE's don't authorize this activity. I recently went into an authorized Rolex dealer who wouldnt touch my modified Rolex and produced the official notice from Rolex that no authorized dealers may service modified Rolex products.

Like many on here I have a Breitling. Mine is the entry level Colt , and I've worn it everyday for 18yrs, still looks great. I chose the colt as the case is pretty small and I'm not a fan of the larger bodies.

For less common brands what about Audemars-Piguet, Patek Phillipe (not sure what you might find in your budget though) or Jaeger-Le Coultre (reverso classic is sub $5K)? Have you thought about Bulgari, I used to have a Rettangolo chrono (got stolen , list is $4700), while not a watch maker per-se, they still have some nice pieces, depending on your tastes.

Here's a good affordable and respectable watch. Under $1k

Hamilton Frogman Chrono

I get more compliments on this watch than my Omega Seamaster and B&R

Here's the watch that's been tempting me the most. I saw one at Tourneau in San Fran. The rubber coated steel bracelet is Very cool.
