Unimog = in German "UNIversal-MOtor-Gerät". Gerät being the German word for machine or device. Basically these little AWD trucks are the swiss knife, jack of all traits, APV on the roads of Europe. Many farmers love them for their multipurpose practicality. Since the early 1950's Unimog has been part of the Mercedes-Benz AG.

The Unimog Museum is located near the A5 and A8 Autobahn intersection. In the heart of the Schwarzwald (or Black Forrest) area of Southern Germany. It is also quite close to Baden Baden and the Stuttgart area(45min away).

The museum is fairly new, only a few years old (~2006). And there are a lot of hands on things for little kids to play with. Even a lbig sand box outside of the museum for the kids to play in. The museum itself is kind of small. So you really won't need a lot of time to see everything. But it would be a nice place to stop for an hour or two - to look around. What was cool is the Museum runs an off road "test ride" area outside - for a few euros you can go on the ride of your life. On the Museum's little proving grounds outside.

The Museum also runs a small Cafe - for small snacks and drinks. In the summer months you can sit outside and enjoy the view of the trucks driving around the off road course.

Well... onto my pics!

Here is a cool video Motor Trend did on the museum and the technology behind what makes a Unimog such an off road BEAST! This video also gives you a good look at the Museum's off road test track!

I know for cars older than 25 years, you can just import those to the USA. You don't need to convert them to US specs. I am not sure about trucks though.

A friend of mine @Evolution80 always tells me he wants one of these old UniMogs. He lives the the perfect mountain area to test one!

They were imported for a couple of years back around 2005-2006 (or so). One of my customers has one. I was truck shopping back then, the same dealer had UNIMOG and Freightliner, I really wanted the unimog, but for what I do it would have been horrible...but so cool.

One of the coolest things at the museum is the cab where you can slide the steering wheel and pedals to the right side or left side.

Freaking awesome, so that's what the portal axles look like.

Somebody in Washington state imported a bunch of these once, I think they were Dutch Army surplus vehicles.

I was going to buy one but I decided to take some time off and pass the bar exam.

Great vehicles, but from what i understand, on the old ones you do need the ambulance tranny if you want to go 55. Now they cost hundreds of thousands of $$$$$$ and you have to be a governator to afford one.

...Great vehicles, but from what i understand, on the old ones you do need the ambulance tranny if you want to go 55. Now they cost hundreds of thousands of $$$$$$ and you have to be a governator to afford one.
Yea.. not everyone is the Governator! lol But where there is a Will there IS a WAY!! You can often find a Unimog for under 10K euros. Most are under 30K range for nice ones.
