Wagon or Sedan

I want the 325xi sedan but my wife likes the wagon for the utility.

I personally don't like wagon's but at least the BMW wagon is the best of the bunch.

Two questions:

1. What has a better resale value?

2. What would you recommend for a family of 2.5 (got 1 kid on the way)?

I am looking at either getting a 330i or a 325iT middle of 2006 via ED to replace my WRX wagon. It'll be a tough choice between the power of the 330i and the utility of the 325iT.
I am not sure about resale, but I sure like the "exclusivity" of the wagon, and the fact that it doesn't scream "yuppie" as loud. If you plan to own the vehicle for a long time, then resale value becomes less critical, and I suspect people who buy older vehicles tend to be more practical, and may prefer wagons.
My WRX wagon, despite its dimunitive proportions, amazes me time and again in terms of what I can stuff into it - such as a 7-piece patio set (techinically, the table was on the roof, but hey, those roof rails are useful). Furthermore, you also get more headroom in the rear compared to the sedan because there's no sloppy roofline. Most people would want to argue for an even larger vehicle (read: SUVs), and it does make sense sometimes. But a compact wagon that is fun-to-drive, and relatively fuel economical, is always something useful to have in the family fleet.

I have to agree with cxcheng. I currently have a Mazda 3 wagon which is too small for our needs. I have a 2 year old son, and we hope to have one more child next year The wagon is practical for our needs like going to Costco and stocking up on supplies. You can't go to Costco / BJ's and fit all that stuff in the back of a sedan. Especially when you have two car seats. The 325xiT is the best looking wagon on the market. Mine should be here by late October. I would have ordered the 5-series wagon if I had the $$$.

If you have to carry people and their stuff on a regular basis then the wagon makes sense. You really give up little, if any, as far as driving experience goes. Honestly, you'll really only notice it's a wagon when you look in the mirror. I really enjoy my e46 touring. My next car will be an e91 for certain. Of course, I'm only slightly biased.

As far as resale goes, I don't know about actual value of Tourings, I haven't gone through that yet, but any time I've wandered in to a dealership, the sales reps tell me they've got people lined up for my car.

They never said that about my Acura.

Once again I find cxcheng to be my twin separated at birth. I want a touring, but I want max performance. So a 325iT is a tough choice next to a 335i. That said, the Touring has some especially great features in the E91, like the panorama roof and all the cool stuff for handling junk in the way back. I have 3 boys, and the back seat in the E46 is starting to get cramped. I am counting on an E91 to take us around euro next summer. It is a great car -- I think the tourings are a much higher % of sales in euro because they are used to tourings being sports cars, whereas in NA there is more of a station wagon = boring stereotype. But that makes it that much more fun to disabuse the naive.

If you can fit a stroller or two in the trunk of the sedan, why would you get the wagon? No offense, but most people(myself included) think of soccer moms when they see a wagon and put them on the same level as a minivan.

An E91 ZSP with a windsurfer or a mountain bike on top should dispell anyone of the soccer mom image. Practical, functional, every bit an E9x. Besides, who cares what the onlooker thinks (especially when you are married with children...).

Why not do both? I got my E90 sedan June 1, and our E91 is on order for October delivery!! I hate having to make choices.

Nice E60 tourings! But I think the E91 is even better -- the missing ingredient is the lack of engine choices: we need 330iT, or better yet, 335iT, or 335dT

No offense taken by me........this is exactly the state of mind that keeps most people in the US from buying fine European sport wagons, such as the e91. Frankly, it doesn't bother me, because I don't want everyone and their brother driving around in one. I love the irony of a "cool" wagon, and only the people who really appreciate them deserve to drive them.......BTW, I am told that wagons are considered cool and youthful in Europe. Can any of our European friends confirm this for me?

I agree with stressdoc. I actually think that the new 3 wagon is nicer looking than the 5 wagon (and not just because I can't afford one). It has a much sportier look.

My new E91 touring will be my 3rd BMW touring.

I prefer the touring over the saloon for several reasons.

1) It's more exclusive than the saloon (or Sedan as you call them in US)

2) It looks a bigger and more substantial vehicle.

3) Rear headroom is much better (I can't sit upright in the rear of a saloon and I'm only 6ft 1)

4) I personally prefer the styling over the saloon

5) The boot (trunk) is much bigger and the split rear tailgate is fantastic for loading small items

6) They handle and perform as well as the saloon

I hardly ever carry big items, but when I do it's also very useful!

I agree. It's not a huge load-lugger, but for awkward cargo it's pretty flexible, while still being fun to drive. And you can have tailgate picnics too. What's not to love?

Wagons are "cool" now. Not the family vehicle we grew up with. They afford the comfort and handling of the sedan and the utility of an SUV without the SUV gas mileage.
I'm trying to get my wife to trade her Touareg for the e91... When gas prices get just a little higher, I think she will be sold. My e90 gets 30mpg and her VW gets 17... choice is made for me.
