MotoGP: Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix (08/10/2014)

Well here we are again! I can not believe it is already more than half-way through the season. The break is now done, a lot has come out about 2015 and riders, teams, contracts. Is anyone surprised? Not surprised?

How do you think the second half of the season will go? Will Marc make it a perfect one? Will Rossi dethrone him?

Now that the break is over, we can get back to what we love....racing. Our first stop in 2014 act 2 is IMS and the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix NEXT WEEKEND!!

Introduction:

The first motorsport race which took place at Indy was a motorcycle one on August 14th 1909, on the 2.5 mile oval circuit, and despite its 100-year history it was not until 2008 that MotoGP arrived at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

To celebrate the event an intense modification of the layout was undertaken, but without affecting the legendary oval. The layout of the track, which is 4.170km in length and has 16 turns, incorporates the main straight of the famous oval circuit including the Brickyard and an area between turns 1 and 2 of the oval, before meandering through the vast interior of the IMS.

FUN FACTS

•Seven-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi won the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP in 2008.

•Jorge Lorenzo has earned the most podium (top three) finishes in the MotoGP class scoring four podiums in the first five years of the Red Bull Indianapolis GP. Dani Pedrosa is second with three podiums and Americans Nicky Hayden and Ben Spies tied with two apiece.

•Alex de Angelis became the first motorcycle rider to top 200 mph at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, reaching a top velocity of 201.3 mph during the 2009 race. The current motorcycle top speed record at Indianapolis is 208.6 mph set by Honda’s Dani Pedrosa in 2012.

•Riders in the Red Bull Indianapolis GP can lean their bikes as much as 60 degrees in corners, with the tire contact patch with the asphalt only equaling the size of a credit card.

•Dani Pedrosa holds the MotoGP track record in Indianapolis. Pedrosa clocked a lap at one minute, 38.813 seconds on his factory Honda during qualifying in 2012.

•Dani Pedrosa is the only rider to win multiple Red Bull Indianapolis GPs. Pedrosa won the premier class in 2010 and 2012. Pedrosa is also the only rider to earn multiple pole positions (two) in the MotoGP class in Indianapolis.

•The very first motorized race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a motorcycle event Aug. 14, 1909.

Difficulty for the braking system
Indianapolis | Indianapolis

<------------------light ------------------------>

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a rather slow, narrow circuit and despite approximately 20% of the time spent on the lap braking, it is not a particularly demanding track for the brakes. The only difficulty is caused by the first braking after the finish line characterized by a decent braking distance to go from the initial 331 km/h to the approximately final 173 km/h.

We're still bummed over here that Laguna is no more but the Dorna politics and money are to blame I suppose.

Marq is undoubtedly a talent for the books, but I wish someone could challenge him. We're a Yamaha family so Repsol will never be my favorite but I can't deny Marq. He's taken everything thrown at him and turned it into a win. A part of me wishes Stoner would return just to challenge Marq! I bet Stoner could make Marq a bit nervous. I often feel bad for Dani because he's always in the shadows...even though he's basically ALWAYS on the podium! Great guy.

Even though Repsol is doing well, Vale and Jorge are still up there which makes me happy. So much talent in the top ten, I'm stoked to see how the season turns out. Cal should kill it next year on the LCR. No spots for him on the factory Yamaha last year, but I bet he would have done very well after his performance on Tech 3!

I could chat about this forever....back to work

I would love to see Casey come back. For that to happen, though, I think Dani would have to find another seat (Marc isn't going anywhere) and I don't see that happening with Pedrosa's consistently top performance.

Having said that, if Casey DID return the duels between him and Marc would be absolutely epic. I see MM pushing a bit harder and for the duration and that would be Marc's advantage over Stoner.

I'm pretty sure we'll see Casey on the sidelines at IMS.... hopefully some commentary will come from him. A 2017 return perhaps? When Rossi retires there will be an opening with Yamaha that he would be perfect for and I don't see any of the youngsters moving up to Premier any time soon except for the younger Marquez.

A Lorenzo-Stoner duo would really be difficult for the 2 Repsol riders to fight off. I think, until something like this happens, we'll continue to see MM93 on pole and P1

Marquez is amazing - 21 years old and perfect 9 race wins this season.

Seems like it will be a battle for 2nd and 3rd place this year.

Go VR46!!!

QUOTES --- I'll edit more in later

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team #04)“Indianapolis is a bit of a strange track, but this year it has been resurfaced so it will be interesting to see how the bikes go now. It’s a complicated circuit for all riders: I haven’t had much luck here, and I only managed to get onto the podium in 2012. This year it’s difficult to think that we can fight for the podium, but in any case I’m fourth overall in the standings and I’ll continue to fight hard to keep that position.”

Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team #35)“Indy is a circuit I’m quite looking forward to, and my approach will be the same as always: give my everything to get a good result. Last year I scored a good fifth place after battling with Rossi and Bautista, but this year I think it’s going to be a difficult circuit for the Ducati, with the last four corners cutting back on themselves. We suffered a lot with understeer in Germany so we will have to work hard to improve at Indianapolis.”

Nicky Hayden: "Although undergoing surgery is not usually a positive thing -not least because you lose a lot of time- I'm happy with how the operation went last week. Sometimes it is difficult, but we know that injuries are part of our sport and we must learn to manage them. Everyone knows that my wrist has been causing me problems, especially at recent races. I underwent an operation in June, which helped me to complete the first half of the season, but the truth is I've been riding with a lot of discomfort, and have been unable to perform at my best. So, together with the team, we decided to make an important decision and undergo a larger operation to treat an injury that comes from three years ago -when I broke my scaphoid and did not heal well. According to Dr. Chao the operation was a success and I am very happy, and focusing on my recovery. My right wrist still needs to be immobilised for another week. Then I will begin rehabilitation therapy, and I'll slowly recover mobility. I want to thank the team, sponsors and fans for all the support they are giving me at this time. In the first examination, a week after surgery, I received an injection of platelet-rich plasma to help heal bones. According to the doctor my recovery is on course, which is very positive. It takes patience, but if I have made the decision to have surgery it is to get back to my best. I made the decision thinking about being healthy for the end of the season and already thinking about next year."

*** NOTE: Nicky will NOT be racing this weekend. The DRIVE M7 Aspar team will field Superbike rider Leon Camier for bot this race and the Czech race

I guess I should add Jack Miller to that group...although that might not be until 2017 if Marc VDS has their way.

If anyone wants a recap of the silly season, this provides a good high-level summary:

Marc Marquez # 93
"I've always liked the track, it was a great summer break I had both time to replenish my batteries, as well as for training and intensive preparation for the second half of the season..."

Leon Camier:
“I am excited to have the chance to ride a MotoGP bike with the DRIVE M7 Aspar Team. It will be a tough weekend, with a lot of learning to do because everything will be new to me – the bike, the tyres... I am going to have to adapt to a lot of things in a short space of time. This is a wonderful opportunity for me though, with a very experienced team and I am sure it will be an interesting weekend. I am looking forward to getting out on track at Indianapolis and learning the track as quickly as possible, starting with some laps on the scooter on Thursday. We're not going to start targeting results just now, I think the most important thing is to learn and to adapt.”

My wife and I will be there from Friday until Monday. It was her idea to go.

YAY ME!

Pit passes as well as good seats in a covered area if it rains.

Can't wait to hear those bikes.

Rossi always makes me laugh:

"The next race will not be easy because we now come to routes that are difficult for me . Indianapolis is not exactly my favorite track, but the layout and the lining were changed a bit, we hope that we are competitive there -... Way throughout the second half of the season"

and the ever-determined Jorge Lorenzo said;
"I want to fight and drive as much as possible to win."
and later
"There are still nine races pending and I will do my best I want to fight and drive as much as possible to win at the last.. race in Germany I quite felt comfortable with on the bike and I think I can report back in good shape me now. "

Instead of 1-4 predictions, let's do P2 - P5!

So post 'em up, who do you think will finish behind MM93??
