Would you save a family of ducks?

Simple question. I'll explain exactly what it is for once I get some results in.

So you're driving on the highway one evening, there's no one else around, straight stretch of road when suddenly you see a family of ducks and ducklings in the left lane. You look in your rearview and there is no one. You know that they will eventually get run over because of the divider and they have nowhere to go.

Do you stop to try to get them out of there? (You would have to stop in the middle of the fast lane)

Do you keep on going knowing that they will probably get run over?

Answer the poll and ye shall know why.

Way to go make us look like the meanest crowd ever!

I wouldn't take the change of someone running me, or more importantly my car over for ducks, and I'm the only (probably) environmentalist on this forum.

What if it's a set up and the ducks are planning a carjacking?

Dog? Absolutely.

Ducks? I would try to herd them by honking my horn until they reached safety but if a car came flying up on me I would have to peace out. Simply put, ducks are not worth getting myself hurt/killed.

I'll refrain from jumping your punchline, but I read the story.

I would have stopped, btw. Then maybe break out of Shawshank...

I haven't been keeping up with the story but I thought the ducks were on the shoulder or something? And she stopped right on the highway.

There was a court case in Quebec recently. Woman stopped to pick up baby ducks. Parked car on left lane of a highway. She did not see the mother duck. Did not put on hazards. Motorbike with father and daughter ran into car STOPPED ON LEFT LANE and died.

I just read the story and I'm shocked that she's being charged. There are numerous reasons why cars come to a stop on the highway and there is a reason why those following must maintain a proper following distance. With that said, I really don't understand the issue here - this lady's car was parked on the side of the road and this guy smashed into the back of her but she's being charged? Was she not in the breakdown lane? I just feel like I'm missing some detail on this story.

The story doesn't say she stopped on the side of the road. There was another story a while back about a person parking their car in the middle of the freeway and getting out of it to watch from the side of the road.

Lots of scenarios here. Since it was dark, maybe it was just under the top of a hill that the other drivers went over, and it was to late to see, or a bend in the road, and so on.

Overall, only use the shoulder or ditch to park off the freeway in an emergency, to many people drive by braille.

Here's a more interesting, slightly different, question:
What if it wasn't a family of normal ducks, but a highly endangered specie of ducks (and you clearly knew that it was endangered when you encountered it)? And what if your only two choices were to either run over the ducks (and be subject to prosecution under the Endangered Species Act) or stop and help the ducks (and possibly be the cause of death to a father and daughter on a motorbike)?

She was parked ON the LEFT lane of a multi-lane highway. She was not parked by the side of the road - she was on the left lane. It was dusk. Her hazard lights were not on.

Run them over, the ducks if endangered to that extent should have been protected or moved already. 100's up to 1000's of animals go extinct every year. Why should you endanger yourself or others in such a foolish way to save this one?

Makes more sense now. At the very least she should have put her hazards on.

Follow up - If she pulled away as she saw the motorcycles approaching and they ended up hitting the ducks and dying, would the wife be filing a lawsuit against her anyway for not warning them of the hazard?

The wife did not file a lawsuit. She was charged by the Police and convicted on two counts of criminal negligence causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing death.

Stopping in the middle of the fast lane (or any lane) of a highway for any reason is a way to get yourself killed.

I love baby ducks as much as the next guy, maybe not as much as I love Peking Duck, but if you're that concerned about it, call animal control or PETA or something where they can put cones up, stop traffic, save the ducks, and live happily ever after.

Now, if it were a family of fledgling baby Pterodactyls, I might have voted differently, because you don't see them every day, and I am a big fan of Dinasaurs.
