That last video is actually a Ferrari V12 - don't know why they put the Mclaren photo on it.

And yes, the Renault V6 is...a bit disappointing.

Obviously which Formula had the best sound is arguable. But if there was a vote, mine would go to the early '50's 1.5L BRM V16 (second would be the late '60's 3.0L Matra V12 - prettiest too, third would be the '65 1.5L Ferrari Flat 12).
Whenever the formula has changed - there have been the cries (mine included) that it's been ruined. Amazingly it still draws the enthusiast.

I was starting to write that V-6 engines ALL sound like crap, but anything spun to 20,000 rpm sounds good!

The new V6 sounds for 2014 suck. No arguing, sounds like Indy cars now.

I am not looking forward to next year. How can they make these decisions? They still spend crazy amounts of money despite the lack of testing and engines that are supposed to last multiple races.

Give the fans and the drivers what they want! 1000hp v10's and V12's that sound like God himself dropped a frozen turkey on his big toe!

15000 rpm sucks too. Let them rev to 24000. These dummies have ruined the sound of F1.

I went to an IRL race and the cars noise was so low I didn't need ear plugs. Not cool if F1 cars sound like that.

God damn Max Mosley for letting greenies penetrate into FIA. I saw this coming in 07 when he was talking about environment SMH.

I'm going to dump my engine oil into the nearest river to feel good.

I don't think the current Indycar sound is bad. It is quiet which I like vs the old Indy Cars.

Now onto the sound of the F1 car... That is horrible. They burn less fuel a year (all cars combined) then a 747 on 1 leg of their usually race to race flights.

I don't get it. I bet if they took a poll, asked 1000 fans, and asked every driver, and asked the manufacturers, even if they asked a bunch of non-race fans which engines sounded more exciting, that they'd all pick anything except what they're going to use next year. V6's sound like shit, no two ways about it, especially Turbo V6's.

I know they could still implement the new "green" standards and still make engines that sound good. The way things are going, F1 cars will be probably diesel powered in a few years.

I really think they should forget this "green" BS, let the companies build radical, awesome race cars that truly excite.

As just stated, more fuel is used transporting the teams and cars than is used all year by the cars. Who gives a crap if the cars are efficient.

I don't get it either...

If you want to watch WWII era V8/10/12 engines go around, just watch NASCAR... Technology moves forward and F1 should be at the head of it, not hanging on for some misplaced sense of nostalgia. With the new enhanced KERS etc. we're looking again at around 700+ hp out of these cars. That's technology in action. Remember the 1.1 liter turbo cars of the 70's? Now that was a technology showcase!

All this exhaust sound talk is really just hot air...

Btw. have you guys ever been to an F1 race? Sound clips on the Internet are nice, but hearing the rumble of the engine in person and hearing the cars "crashing" through their gears on downshifts is quite a spectacle that videos don't convey. Check it out some time, I think you'll be surprised.

People should be much less mock outraged about the engine sounds and more upset about DRS. That's a stupid gimmick that should have never happened...
