E46 Owner looking to buy E90/E92
Greetings all,
As the title says Im thinking about making the hop from my E46 330CI to an E90/92. My budget is around $20k for something with less than 60k miles on it. I will most likely drive it for an extra 140k miles. My question is, considering that I plan on driving it for a while, should I avoid the 335? I am looking for reliability over all and power after that. I've been looking at the 335, 330 and the 328. I think the 330 was last made in 2007 and Im looking for something a little newer maybe 2009 - 2011 but I'd go for a 2007 330i. Any advice you guys can give will be greatly appreciated! I just bought a 2006 330I with 77K miles for 15K after owning a 2003 E46 330I for 6 years. I have to say it is a very different car, so at first I was not too happy. I loved my e46 only sold it because it had a lot of miles on it, needed a lot of minor repairs and as a real estate agent I just felt it was time to have something newer. My biggest initial disappointment was the lack of a spare tire, the car has run flats and I don't trust them. I don't like the harsher ride and the cost of replacement tires either. Also the tranny on my new to me E90 does this weird bump downshift when rolling to a stop from 2nd to 1st. I'm hoping a tranny software update will fix that. I always change the tranny oil on any used car I buy immediately and changed the oil on my E90. My indy mechanic says it is a good idea despite all the stuff about lifetime oil and if you change the oil it will fail BS.
I have to say the handing of the e90 330I is better than the e46. Both had/have sports package with staggered tires, but the E90 is more like it's on rails and feels safer. The brakes on the e90 are also amazing. It gets slightly better MPG. I think I am going to really like this car after getting over my e46 which was also a great car, but different. I wasn't expecting such a big difference in three model years. |

I've actually been test driving a few 328i and 335i E92's and the 328's dont feel like they pull quite as strong as my E46. It could be because they are newer but I just replaced my suspension on the E46 and did a little engine work.
I think I am going to go for this manual 2009 335i E92 with about 62k miles on it. It pulls so sweet and feels like it is just on a rail when I hit a turn. I have to say that I love feeling the turbo kicks in. The convertible 335's that I have driven just dont seem quite as beastly as the regular coupe. They are asking about $18900 for it with the sport package. Does this sound like a decent deal? It has had 3 owners, pretty clean car fax as well. Does anyone know about the potential repairs that I am looking at for this car and 62k? Im most worried about the turbos and anything that could be super expensive to repair at a shop! Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated! -Rets |

OP-Most would probably say the 328i is the more reliable car because of the history behind the 335. However, as long as you keep the maintanence up you should be fine regardless of the make. Yes the 335 does tend to have things go wrong faster than the 328 but maybe that's what you trade for having more power.
All and all it's really up to you!

330i is a tank. They were only made in 2006 in the US.
Some common issues like window regulators and power door locks, valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket but easy stuff to work on. The 335 had HPFP issues and turbo wastegate issues. And the whole direct injection deal causes carbon buildup on the valves which has to be removed with walnut blasting (none of this on 330i/328i). On the other side though, you can do more to a 335 in mods, easier to get HP out of it, JB4 chip and the technology is better too (bluetooth and phone integration, USB inputs) The 330i and 328i are pretty much maxed out stock and there isn't much aftermarket you can do to add HP. For me I don't need the extra power, I would only use it on the on ramp and for passing. Most of my driving is at one speed, cruising. Both cars cruise the same, acceleration is the big difference. |

Where in Texas are you. Dallas, San Antonio, Houston or smaller city?
I live in Houston and I got mine at Texas Direct Auto. Hellava place! Test drive cars like it was an amusement park! That's where I got mine.

If you're looking for reliability before power, then go for a 330i, or a 328 if you want something newer. Also as a previous E46 330i owner, I can confirm that the E9x 328 does indeed feel slower. The E46 had more torque and less weight to lug around, no surprise there.

Well I bit the bullet and went for the 2009 335i Tasman Green Metallic. If any of you are in the DFW area and are the previous owner, drop me a message. I'd like to get some background info on it. I love how this thing drives. It EATS up highway! Im looking forward to getting to know her and am very happy with my choice.

Yea, power won me over! This one actually was nicely modded and the power seduced me. Alas it just threw an SES. I Havent had time to read it yet. praying its going to be under $1k to fix!
