Question Question On Friend's Flight...

my friend is going to bankok, thailand. he found a great deal for about $1000 which includes tax, etc. but the catch he he will arrive in incheon south, korea at 5.30am and his flight from there to bangkok is 13 hours away.

so my friend has 13 hours in south korea to spare and he plans on going outside to seoul and exploring. but here is my question.

i thought you can't leave the airport when transfering. i thought when transfering you have to stay at the airport and you can't leave the terminal area (i guess thats the name for it) and you can't go outside.

so my question is can my friend leave and explore for the 13 hours he has or he has to stay inside the airport? what doesn't make sense to me is what happens to his luggage during the 13 hour seperation?

PS: im not sure if it's a connection or two different tickets.

I don't see why you couldn't leave the airport.
Obviously he'll have to go through security once more. So make sure he has his tickets/ID/Passport ready. I would think that his checked luggage would be put into holding till the connecting flight arrives (as long as it's not two separate tickets). So he shouldn't have to claim then re-check that (not positive though, as I typically travel with only a carry-on). If he has any carry-on luggage, he will have to lug that around.

He should check and verify that a visa isn't required to enter the country.

The airport is quite a distance from Seoul. If memory serves, its a good 45 minutes away. Not as bad as the Narita/Tokyo distance, but pretty far...

Have your friend check the time to/from Seoul and the buses that run between the city and airport.

As other posters has mentioned, I don't think theirs a problem going out and coming back - just have to go through security/customs/immigration

Inchon airport is huge - with a shoppingmall built inside. pleanty to do inorder to waste time..

most airports haev this '1 day' visa thing where he can just get at the airport. the onboard luggage he can either carry with him or there are places in the airport where you can store like a locker. as for the big luggages it depends, sometimes/airports require you to re-check-in the big luggage or sometimes when booking the flight you can ask them to directly have the destimation of luggage as Bangkok. the big luggage part depends on the security that the airport has.

the best thing now is make sure that his luggage goes straight to Bangkok so he don't need to worry about it in Korea. then you can just get the 'day pass visa' to visit.

my parents travel alot so lots of times they would extend the transfer time and would just go out to have something to eat and shop or even go to a hotel, rest and take a shower.

As long as your friend's passport does not need a visa to enter Republic of Korea...

The airline will take care of your luggage for you. I had a 12 hour stay in Singapore on the way to India and I had a complimentary hotel with shuttle for my family and spent most of the day sightseeing. You also have the choice of staying at the airport but who the hell would you want to stay in an airport for 13 hours if you have the chance to go outside.
