car in college?

Hey,

i know there are a couple of you in college and i just wanted some insight. I heard you're not allowed a car for the first few years in college and on top of that its just a hassle with the parking and the door dings and what not. So i was thinking about just selling the car and then getting a motorcycle for college and graduate school. Then hopefully get out of college and get a car with my own money. This sound like a good idea? Or is a car pretty handy in college.

Depends on the school. Having a car was huge for me at school. Now I didn't have a very nice one so I really didn't care where I parked it. There are a lot of a**holes at school so having a nice car may be a challenge. Kids used to run through the parking lot at night and jump on the cars and kick the doors. I went to school in the midwest so maybe it is different, highly doubt it though! Kids will be kids. Save your money, get an average car for school and wait until graduation to reward yourself. Good luck!!

Get an average car. It does depend on the school though, some may require you to meet certain credit requirements, others say after first year.

Some schools don't allow freshmen or freshman and sophomores depending on the school. Or they may allow fresh/soph to have cars but they make you park at annex lots that are usually several miles from campus or your dorm with very little security if any.

Personally if when the time comes and I was capable of buying my kid a brand new BMW they sure as hell won't be driving it to school to park in a school lot that is typically vandalism/door ding heaven.

Now some schools have nicer parking that you have to pay more for like a parking garage that is also security patrolled. It's usually junior/seniors only but they may offer it to younger classes at a higher rate. Ask some students when your on a visit. Or look around the neighbor hood, some people oddly enough rent out a garage spot/parking in their driveway at their house to students. This is usually at smaller schools in smaller cities.

I go to a private school in upstate NY. Here, no cars for freshman. Afterwards you have to buy a parking permit for $125 for each semester. I've had my e46 330ci for the whole time and while I definitely have some dings and scratches here and there nothing major was done to hurt my car.

For me the benefit of a car far out weighs the luxury tax of parking. Though I can see where it would be a problem for some schools. I have some friends that live in Hoboken, NJ and parking there is about as bad as it can get. If I lived there I wouldn't think twice about giving up my car simply because its not worth it and is a money and time sink.

thanks guys, i'm thinking about dumping the car and putting my plans of switching over to a 335i on hold. Although an alpine white 335i(e92) with red interior and a piano black dash would be heavenly, i couldn't bare to think of what those college kids would do to the car. And plus this way I can use a bit less money which will probably help my parents out a bit, thanx for the comments.

Ill still probably lurk around on here with our without a bimmer. Hopefully ill be a fellow bmw owner after college. but for now looks like my sights are set on a yamaha r6 or a suzuki gsxR 600/750

anybody have tips on motorcycles?

that would be greatly appreciated as this will be my first bike.

i would vote against it, get a beater for college? but if your not gonna drive it that often and it just sits there to gather dust and depreciate in value then i would suggest selling it and then buying the next gen after you get out of college.

theres a mall very close to my college that I park inside of its indoor structure on rainy days or when parking is ridiculous. I then just walk about a half a mile to class. My classes were in the "Village" section of my college this semester so parking was a breeze, I just parked all the way at the end and the parking spaces were HUGE.....you'd have like 3-5 feet between your car and the white line that separates your parking space if you parked close to the curb. Depending on where your school is, say in San Fran cali where even your college doesnt allow cars, you could just park on a near by street or inside a structure then your fine. Or in some rural area where there is nowhere to park, then you have a problem.

Ive been going to FIU for 1.5 years and there are no such rules like that over here. At FIU, all you need is a parking sticker that you put in the back window of the car and get a new one when the time arises.

I drive my 330i to school and I usually tend to park in corners and in reverse (having the car more to the corner to protect it) but sometimes I get the idiots that always get too close to me even though there is a good length between my car and the parking spot's line. This last semester I had to go to school on thursday for an afternoon class where it is impossible to find a corner spot (I always park in the garages), so I do my best to park my car in the middle of it and straight. So far have I not gotten any dings or scratches from other people.

My suggestion if your driving your car to school is to just do your best to park it well as to avoid (or reduce) the chances of getting door dings, etc.

Hope this helps
Tony

Depends there are some wild people there. Plus so many dumbass drivers. If you find a good area then yea. I know since I use to live in Florida and during high school went to visit friends at UCF. good school. good parties.

I daily drive my 335i to my campus and I'm there Mon-Fri. I always park next to the nicer cars in the lot, where they actually park decent. Some of the parking jobs I've seen are just disgusting..cars taking up 2 lanes, cars going too far into the space and eat up half of the space in front.

My previous car, an Evo, didn't have such good luck though. The car was black and on 2 separate occasions, someone rear ended the back bumper and left hideous marks. There was also a 6-7 inch crease along the door panel, I guess some idiot in a truck or SUV tried to reverse out.

I've heard of more people having their bikes (motorcycles) vandalized/stolen then major issues w/ having cars.. but I think it all comes down to a couple of questions

1. Are you staying on/off campus? - If yes, then the majority of the time your car will be parked and taking up space - BUT..on the flip-side most of the best parties, clubs, extracurricular shit is gonna be poppin off campus. There's nothing worse then being stuck on campus depending on somebody else for a ride.

2. Do you mind parking away from the action? - When I went to FSU I had car all 4 yrs..no bimmer back then but still a meticulous freak about my ride. I just chalked up parking close on campus or garages 99% to avoid all of the poss. miscellaneous crap that could happen to the ride by parking on the outer edges of campus (at the football stadium) and then catching the on campus bus routes.

3. If you do take a luxury car to school, do you mind being percieved as a spoiled brat/snob/etc.? If you think certain connotations come w/ driving a bimmer in public - just multiply that X1000 in a college setting. It's definitely not the hardest thing to deal w/ but when your 'friends' come to find out what your pushing or your professors by chance - jealousy can set in pretty quick

It depends on the school, I had no problem with my last car, but now I do. Ketchup and syrup another time, but we might know who. Track him down and than kill him. Its risky, why being off campus you dont deal with shit over night that people can do or if they are drunk.

way better off as a commuter with a nice car cuz its college full of dumb ass rude kids.

last but not least a good alarm. Sadly thats what I needed all along and what my old car had. Due to the 335s wiring, still waiting for the module to get my viper install complete.
