Audi R8, Really That Bad?

I guess it's all fancy with its mid engine and fancy expensive light-weight parts and cool tranny, but why is it so slow? 0-60 in 4.6sec? For a 420BHP 4.2L V8, that sounds far from impressive. Is it because Audi is trying not to compete with their Lamborghini Gallardo or something? For the price ($109,000) it should be doing low 4.x sec 0-60 times or something. Even the Gallardo isn't that impressive with 4.1s 0-60.

I guess they make up for that in handling?

Sheesh, I would have thought alot faster than that for the money. Not even faster than a PROcede 335i 0-60 and 1/4.

The 1/4 mile and 0-100mph times weren't impressive either. The procede 335i will kick the R8's butt in straightline performance I imagine. It tops off at 187mph, so if you uncap the speed limiter on the 335i you might have a damn good race.

I know it isn't all about speed, but that's an important factor in buying a performance-built car. Would you like your Z06 Corvette doing 0-60 in 5.0s?

+1 I don't even think that car is that much lighter then our cars at most 300lbs if that but I doubt it.I remember Top Gear reviewed it saying it wasn't that impressive. I still think it looks great tho I'd buy one if it were the price of an M3.

The R8 as a package is a lot more than just an engine and a 0-60 time. For starters the exclusivity.

if you wanted that sort of performance, why not just go with an exige? not blazing fast acceleration but the handling is even better i would assume...and cheaper

Hey kids your numbers are wrong. Magazine tests put the 0-60 at 4.0 seconds and they said they liked the handling better than the 911 because it's much more composed.

There's more to life than going straight really fast. If that was the only thing that mattered, you wouldn't need a steering wheel.

+1. The time of 4.6 you are quoting is 0-62 (not 60) and comes from Audi, so it is understated. I have read reviews showing a 0-60 of 4-4.1 sec. I don't think there is any chance a 335i could keep pace with that car, even with a piggyback and exhaust.

I knew those times were BS, I was just seeing what everyone else thought

Those sound much more realistic for this car.

If the R8 were that awesome then they wouldn't be working on the 'upgraded' V10 version. Audi does not make a reliable product and they don't seem to do alot with their horsepower...the RS4 is only marginally faster than the E46 M3 and the S54 is coming up on 10 years old.

Wrong answer...just because they are coming up with a V10 version...doesnt mean the R8 in standard original form isnt great. Its the whole package...

Disagree..the issue I have with audi is weight..and resale/residual values.

OK, well if the R8 weighed 2800 lbs and held it's resale value than I would have less of a problem with $109K! 2 sides of the same coin! But since it does not and it's resale drops like a Knieval stunt...

Consider the competitors:

Vette Z06
Porsche 911 and new 928
Lexus LF-A
new Acura NSX
GT-R
M3, M6
Aston
Exige SC
Tesla
etc...

No matter where you are on the mix of luxury/performance I can think of at least 2 better options for less $, and/or more of both for the same $.

Well, this is why I asked if those 4.6s 0-60 figures were correct. Either way, that's not impressive at all for a car of that price. I'm sure it handles pretty well, but not much better than some other AWD with racing suspension like an EVO.

meh. hate american cars. i would gladly buy an M5, in deep sea blue... ohh yeah baby! turn me on!!

for me, personal experiences with AUDI have just dissapointed me. really. theres more electrical problems in that car than ANY thing ive seen (yea! even a 240sx! lol). its really damaging the "german" image. my friend just said on the phone that "all these German cars have electrical problems guttering out of their ass." yeah. thanks Audi. ive been in around fifteen audi's. know what? fourteen of those had electrical problems, and the one that didnt was brand new. i dont know. im really just against them for putting out unreliable cars. and ontop of that, just like MB, there too heavy and sluggish. no thanks. ill stick with BMW. if not, ill move up to an Aston Martin.

and btw, that CLS Brabus rocket... am i the only one that things it looks fugly?
