Thumbs down Why is it cool that exotic car exhaust notes basically sound whiny like motorcycles?

This may be a slightly flammable topic, but I've never understood the fascination with the exhaust notes of "high-end cars" (like the $500K+ ones)... which, to me at least, sound exactly like whiny motorcycles (which sound like F1 cars). I appreciate what F1 cars can do, I just think they sound annoying.

My favorites are the Audi R8 and RS4:
R8:

RS4:

They have a lot more bass in them, which makes them sound more badass in my book.

Thoughts? Obviously this discussion involves a great deal of personal preference. (Maybe 100%.) But I do find it ironic that the ultra-expensive cars sound the same as ultra-cheap (in comparison) motorcycles.

Happy weekend.

Different people like different things and have different tastes.

Also I don't think anyone who does like the high revving engine sound because it sounds like a motorcycle though, it just happens to be a coincidence both sound similar in that regards.

You're right, this is sure to end in flames. That said, I actually kind of agree with you. I prefer engine notes with more rumble and bass than high revving screamers. That's part of the reason I actually love how my engine sounds, despite (or maybe because of) the fact it's a diesel.

...I get it functionally, but is the sound appealing?

Another great exhaust note in my opinion: C63 AMG

A lot of the reason that people love the sound of Ferraris and the others is because you simply cannot replicate the sound on any other type of car. Just like most others in this thread, I prefer a deeper exhaust note, but when you hear a Ferrari zoom by you, you KNOW it's a Ferrari.

And a motorcycle and a high end exotic car sound nothing alike.

+1...same here. It must be the flat crank sound of the Ferraris that a lot of people like. Over in the U.S, we're used to the lopey sound and burble of big V-8s. A lot of people like the sound of Subarus...to me they sound like my the Briggs and Stratton engine on my lawnmower..LOL

I'm a fan of both sounds, I've seen live F1 races and let me tell you those machines sound amazing live. That being said I'm currently planning on getting a C6 ZO6 for my weekend toy and came across this beautiful exhaust note(granted it wouldn't be very nice for a daily driver)

not all motorcycle exhausts sound like high pitched crap...

found this on youtube, listen to the Ducati (Vtwin) go by 1st, then the YZFGSXKAWI-something something go by 2nd.

Not a big ferrari exhaust note fan. However, I would still hapily own and drive one if I had the means. The clip above of the corvette got my attention. Also, something about the way a porsche 911 turbo sounds is very nice.

Typically the high end cars are running more/smaller cylinders (ie 10/12), hence the change in note. As well as the higher reving.

This. Whether you like the sound or not comes down to personal taste.
