Updated: Windshield Repair :(

EDIT - Here's the end result. Hard to get great clear pics on a reflective surface, but you get the idea. Definitely more noticeable than I had hoped.

So I very thankfully have never needed a windshield repair or replacement on any vehicle in the past. Today I was driving down the highway and I saw it. A good sized rock coming at my windshield, and at 70mph nothing I could do, so smack goes the rock and crack goes the windshield.

I've heard in the past that things like this can simply be filled and are good to go. I called my insurance company and they cover repair for free if it's repairable. My appointment with Safelite is in 2 days when they'll come to my office to check it and attempt repair.

In the opinion of the hive mind here, some of whom I'm sure have had this happen, is this repairable and will it be noticeable?

any kind of crack or chip less than the size of a dollar bill will be something they attempt to fix with a repair.

insurance will task it out to safelite.

it looks like the damage in low down in front of the driver, so if the repair looks like shit, then go ahead and complain and have them replace it.

usually a repair has no deductible (depending on state) or is cheap like $25
a new windshield may have no deductible either depending on what state you are in

Yeah $500 for new windshield or $0 for repair. So I'm trying repair. Just really wondered if anyone had something like this and it looked super terrible or was distracting.

Oh absolutely- have a place like Safelite come by and seal that chip- sooner than later! With every road in perfection comes a chance for it to spider right across your windshield!

It doesn't really seem to be in your line of sight either, so that's a major plus...

Do it on your insurance's nickel too. I had it done a couple of years ago and it worked out great!

I have a Local Guy here that repairs for 40 stone chips.
find someone in your local area.

find bodyshops....or an area where there are body shop galore.
then ask them, can you recommend a Mobile Glass repair guy.
if not....ask them for a glass replacement guy....then phone this guy(s)....and ask him if he knows someone who repairs chips.

Thats how I found him......LOL.

I have 2 chips smaller than yours on my X5 windshield, I bought a repair kit at autozone and gonna attempt to repair it myself.

I have had a couple of chips very similar to the one pictured repaired successfully in the past including one just recently on our Mini Cooper, although none were a BMW windshield. We used a local independent windshield shop as they were a lot less than Safelite. I have noticed in the repaired area a slight shadow or line from the repair, a half moon shape if you will. Have never had an issue with the repairs

I went through several of those on my X5. That one is easily fixable and most insurance companies will do it free of charge so they don;t have to do the whole windshield. But get it done ASAP! On my second one, I was really busy and decided to wait to the following day. Got very cold that evening and when I came out in the morning, it had spidered.

Same thing happened to me...led to crack across the whole window. $1,400 for an OEM windshield...it sucked.

My E91 is ready for its 3rd windshield. Kind of annoying. I have had small rocks hit my windshield while on the highway (near Amsterdam international airport). Starts as a chip, and quickly begins to crack.

I have been getting the windshields replaced by the dealer with OEM glass. I have good insurance with full glass coverage, so replacement does not cost me a dime.

On the positive side, after 30K+ miles, the windshields start to pit so a free replacement is quite the "upgrade".

If you have a non dealer replace your glass, make sure that they do not ruin the electronics that reside within the rear-view mirror housing. The windshield wiper sensor and interior humidity sensor are in there.

I did a repair once on something similar with an autozone kit and it was barely noticeable and it never cracked any further. But you have to do it soon.

Perfectly repairable. You can DIY or have a glass company do it. Since insurance does it for free, have someone else do it for you. I have a very, very small minute chip in my windshield from a pebble the other day. It's so small that it's not worth calling insurance over it, so I'm going to just get a resin kit to make it less noticeable.

Had a similar chip repaired. The only thing I will say is that it is completely unnoticeable from outside the car (in fact you'll have a hard time finding it). But it is noticeable from inside the car.

yeah. I called my dealer and the SA I usually deal with said "without looking it up exactly, you're probably looking at $1800."

Nope.

Safelite repaired it. You can definitely tell it was repaired, but oh well, at least it's not cracked and I'm not shelling out $500 deductible for a new windshield through insurance.

I'll post pic later if anyone cares.

I've got the bill for replacing my windshield (rain sensor, humidity sensor, light sensor) in front of me - the glass was $485 (Sekurit or Plikington can't remember which), labor and materials was another $300. Seems to have been a discount on the glass - probably insurance related.
