Need recommendation for lens on Canon XSi

I just purchased a Canon XSi kit, and need recommendation for some premium lens. I'm a complete newb on DSLRs, but very interested in making it a hobby. Can someone recommend me a lens that can put out quality pictures under $300 range? thanks !

50mm 1.4 is a good start IMO, but it's around $400. If that's way over your budget, I'd just grab a 50mm 1.8 (around $70) and start saving for your next lens.

In general prime lenses (fixed focus aka no zoom) provide better image quality, better low light performance, and shallower depth of field. I'm actually in the process of getting rid of my 24-70mm/2.8 for a couple prime lenses.

I assume the kit came with the 18-55IS lens.

As above mentioned, the 50mm f1.8 is a great portrait lens on a budget (the f1.4 is about 3x the price - but built much more solidly)

A nice addition to complement the 18-55 would be the new 55-250IS lens for about $300. This will give you almost a complete zoom range.

It really depends on what kind of photography you do.
But if your budget is only 300. then the 50mm 1.4 is the best out there for the money.
If you want something around 1000 when you save up. Go with the 24-105mm which is good and covers a wide spectrum
