U.S. Consumer Confidence Drops to Three-Decade Low Amid Economic Headwinds

Quote:
Confidence among U.S. consumers plunged in August to the lowest level since May 1980, adding to concern that weak employment gains and volatility in the stock market will prompt households to retrench.

Why would I 'cash in' on short term swings when the market is tanking? And you can provide AAPL as an example of a solid A+ company, but it is traditionally a volatile stock without a dividend. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but the positions in my portfolio that I'm talking about are solid companies, especially ones with dividends, and I don't rely on short term swings for those stocks (ex: MCD, WM, MO, KFT, JNJ, INTC). I buy them in a depressed market and hold them knowing that there is a better than average chance that in the long run, they will slowly increase their dividend and the stock price will appreciate. Depending on the stock, I'll occasionally add to them in a depressed market to lower my cost basis. Now tell me again why I would sell these stocks (which I've owned for 1 year plus) in a down market? Or even if I suspected that the market was going to drop?

Do you know when rock bottom is? I sure don't, but I've been buying or writing calls every time the market tanks 500 points.

I have a stock that pays me 15%

hasn't failed me all year

Plus, I'm up about 5% on the stock itself if I chose to sell, though I won't as it's a holding stock

Posted on 8/9/11...position up 35% approx on both positions...getting close to target on SPX...will close out positions then and look to go short...I would look for 0.5-0.62 fibonnacci retrace level to go short....1230-1250 level.

Volume high on selloff, volume low on snapback rally...enough said.....

So if something is up 16,000 percent and I originally invested $1,000, would I now be sitting at $16,000?

Stop investing right now. You can't do simple math.

16,000 x 1,000 = 16,000,000.00

it's 16,000 percent. So the guy above you is correct. $1000 x 160 = 160,000
