Escort 8500x50 vs. Escort 9500xi

Hey everyone,

I wasn't sure whether or not this is the right place to post this..

But anyways, I'm in the market for a good radar detector. Firstly, I know theres LIDAR and I would be screwed if I got tagged with laser, but I'm in Los Angeles and I don't want to have legal issues with a laser jammer.

I was originally comparing V1 vs 9500ix, but decided on the 9500ix. I then saw that the 8500 x50 also gets great reviews and is 200$ new on ebay. So does anybody have experience with both? or even just the 8500 x50? I wanted the 9500xi for the ability to block out false alarms, but saving about 200$ is worth it if the 8500 x50 is even 85-90% as good as the 9500ix.

Sorry kind of wordy post haha Appreciate any feedback.

I've been using escort radar detectors for 10+yrs. I've been using the passport max for a few months now.

Wow thats a really good deal. I see that it is now discontinued because it was replaced by the 500 Pro. Would this large discount justify the differences between the 500 Pro and GX65?

Last time I read about them the difference was too subtle to be noticed. The features are still the same but the price it much higher, so I would stick with Bel GX65.

Yea, I spent a bunch of time researching it just now haha. Definitely worth it. Thanks for the link it was such a good little deal. Saved me quite a bit. Hopefully the GX65 holds up since it seems some people have problems with build quality.

I went with the 9500xi over the MAX. I didn't even consider the X50 because my 8500 (that was 13 yrs. old) was giving too many false alerts and my other friends with X50's along the way only had a little better experience in regards to that problem. I would definitely go with the 9500xi over the X50. The reduced false alerts (I would assume to be a MUST HAVE in a city like L.A.) and GPS ability to automatically store regularly detected false alerts is totally worth the money.

I have owned an 8500 X50 for a few years, and absolutely love it. I turned off the X and K bands, and do not get any false alarms. Here in MN cops do not use X and K. Not sure about other states...

I have two 8500s and the only time I got a ticket was when I was being stupid. It was going off so I slowed down. It stopped so I accelerated to go around a car in front of me and that was the cop who was setting it off. I think they work well for the money. You learn where the false alarms are and just ignore them.

my 9500ix is way more sensitive and has better range than the x50 did. If you do a lot of city driving (automatic door openers) then the 9500ix is the way to go, no more false alerts with the built in GPS!

I've had my 9500ix for roughly 8 years now. I've had updates installed periodically.

Guess how many tickets I've had?

0. Worth every penny. Makes no sense to skimp on something that can save you so much money/hassle. That's my personal opinion only.

It'll save us all if we periodically speed but even with this and laser jammers a few times if I'd just been ripping around like I do past under covers it wouldn't have done anything

So I tend to asterisk it whenever I offer advice to fellow speeders... If someones just going to rip around town 100+ where its visible to marked, unmarked and off duties alike you'll get caught regardless if you're packing the best air, laser, and radar capabilities.

I agree, no point to save on something like this haha. Especially when tickets are about 400-600$ in California...

I ended up with the GX65 by Beltronics. So far so good, but I am kind of confused as to how I can "manually" block out false alarms. Whenever I try to it asks me if I want to mark then it marks it as a "speed trap" so I still get warned that there is a speed trap coming up lol Is it possible to mark it where it just doesn't make noise? (Like in the automatic function of the 9500ix)

I worry with my 9500ix that its blocking out spots [it auto blocks say if you drive past a location too many times] that one day I'll drive past and an actual cop will be there but because it auto blocked a door or something that it won't work.

I'm very happy with the 9500ix for being so cheap [my hardwired sti-rplus was 3 times as much and while that will go on a car I plan to keep given the cost of the 9500ix its hard to justify what I spent on the Sti-r

On mine, the "manual block" worked as advertised. Did you press the "Mute" button 3 times or the "MRK" button? The "Mute" button is what you want. The "MRK" button will mark it as a "speed trap".

Oh damn haha. Yea, I've been pushing "MRK". Should've read the manual... Thanks for the tip.

So I just tap the mute and it will mark that spot as a false read?

Yep...but you'll need 3 presses. The 1st press is the actual mute. The 2nd press is to mark that spot. The 3rd press is to confirm and store the marked spot.

I got the redline simply bc I didn't want extra bells and whistles. That said do not do their trade in program if you have an old one floating around. I got 4x escort's offer by selling on eBay.

I've heard a lot on the redline, and I do live in the city so debating on the top 3 mentioned here

I've driven mine in many cities it's quite good with minimal false alarms, and you can disable just X which is nice. Only complaint is no volume scroll wheel on side you need to do a few button presses to change. My X50 I often kept low in city and high in highway which you can do with the redline it's just a bit more complicated. Overall though the performance is great, it's matte black and pretty minimalist design blends into headliner nicely. With the mount I have up high it's honestly barely noticeable and I forget it's there.
