Fun, reliable, driver's car

As a former owner of two E46 M3's I have been lurking, posting, searching this forum for a while now in hopes of finding a E90 M3, however I am at the point where I am not really sure that's the car that I want. Always loved the S65, but never got to love the looks of the E9x cars.

I am leaning towards just getting a fun temporary car to replace my current not fun whatsoever vehicle until I make up my mind on the next keeper or long term car. I am cousious of droping $40k on something I am not sure I want.

I am looking for a 4 door car, that will not depreciate much if any in the next 6 to 12 months, that will be reliable and not hard to sell.

Following are cars that I have been thinking in the last couple of days and wanted to hear what everyone's experience or thougths are as yeah or nay based on my needs/wants: E39 M5; E39 540i Msport. Any other suggestions are welcome as well, as I am not 100% set on any car and keep my mind open on any other fun driver's cars out there.

Thanks for any valuable input!

2003 540i M-sport is a sharp car. With $40K you can add B7 RS4 and B8 S4 to the list, no?

$40k would be the budget for the long term car, E90 M...for the temporary fun car I am looking to spend no more than $20k.

And yes, I have also considered the S4 instead of the E90 M. Love the looks, not a fan of the supercharged V6. I even considered F10 550 instead.

540i - fun, easy to sell if you buy it right, ......reliable....maybe not so much.... It's 10 years old.

IMO, I'd probably go with a very late year model E39 530i. They are reliable, great looking, can be had with MT, and you can probably sell them for what you bought it for. I'd probably avoid the E39 M5 if this is just going to be a temporary car.

I'd also consider an E36 M3 sedan, especially one that has really been looked after with all the maintenance done. It'll be in the low teens, and they are just so much damn fun to drive.

Honestly, for $40k, I personally can't think of anything else I'd want apart from an E9x M3. They are just such good cars. A few tweaks cosmetically, and especially an exhaust makes a world of difference to me. But I've always been a huge fan of the way the E92 looks so I guess it was a no brainer for me.

P.S:

G37s, IS350 are both neat.

Evo x, sti are pretty fun, it's just hard finding a good condition one since it's all the kiddies that drive it.

335i is pretty fun. Hope something doesn't break though lol.

BRZ will be too slow for you coming from e46 M3, AP2 S2k on the other hand is a different story.

TSX manual previous gen, fwd but reliable, great drive-train, 4dr, will keep value. Any older German car will require more maint.
