Out of curiosity, what do you regard as proper compensation for American workers? More or less?

Studies have found that given the following choice:

Make $60,00/ year while your neighbors make $70,000/year
--or—
Make $50,000/year while your neighbors make $40,000/year

Most Americans take the second. It seems that the easiest way to get ahead is to see your fellow citizens get beaten down. I suppose this explains why we, as a nation, standby while retirement plans get gutted and young families with sick children go bankrupt.

And the old money laughs all the way to the bank.

Mag, I don't think they should be treated like slaves or animals. Seriously. But I do believe they should gathered up, put on buses and taken back to their homeland. Come here legally, obey our laws or don't come here at all, for any reason.

You are wrong there, my friend. The vast majority have no intention of becoming American citizens, learning our language, or obeying our laws. All they want to do is make money, send it back home and eventually go back home and spend it.

Indeed many of these intend to take over the South Western United States by having huge families. They feel it was taken from them and it still belongs to them. To me, these illegal immigrants are the enemy.

DaveO, you are correct sir. However we are talking about ILLEGAL immigrants here, not LEGAL ones.

However, I will only respond to this one right now. I am a physician practicing in Los Angeles. Things are very different in Southern California than PA laws. Which is one of the problems that people are trying to address. It is not illegal everywhere to deny them services. The medical system here....if you are an illegal alien, you can only seek medical care from "county" hospital. These are medical facilities that cater to the uninsured...regardless of legal status. The closest county hospital to the US/Mexico border is Harbor/UCLA in Torrance California. That is a good 160 miles north of the border. All of the illegals in betwen...have to find resourcefull
ways of getting any help, and many are not successfull. Many fear going to any facility for fear of being deported or legally prosecuted. Is this the way is should be??
Mag, I have a friend with a serious heart condition and he has no insurance. The county hospitals here in Orange County have turned him away when he has gone to them for help. He needs an operation and the only way they will operate is if he has a heart attack, or something serious like that. If this happens, and he's not standing at the door to an emergency room, he will certainly die.

Why is it illegal aliens are welcomed in with open arms for any aliment at all? I don't get it.

What do you mean by come here legally? You think these folks would be granted visas if they were to pursue legal means in their home countries.
If you're at a traffic light and it stays red for over two hours, are you going to stay there like a moron waiting for the light to turn green?

For your information, most of these folks would've been denied visas to come to this country legally because they would fall into the economic refugees category.
Good thing native americans didn't have the strict immigration rules we now have othrwise we would've been a land of illegals.

Old money was earned by someone, perhaps the founder of a major industry which employs tens of thousands. I don't come from old money, for the most part, but my parents worked hard to ensure my future, and I am doing the same for my kids. Each generation should do this. My parents came to the US in 1949.

The second paragraph is right, but mostly for the wrong reason. It hurts the economy to try to enforce equality in income ahead of achievement. That drives down everybody's total. That's the reason socialism doesn't work. Capitalism works when people want more money for themselves. The best way to sink the economy is to redistribute wealth and stop rewarding productivity. Pay people to sit and watch Oprah the same as people working double shifts, or who design software. Ensure the jobs of people who perform sloppily because it's not their fault and because they're part of a union.

It's true that short term greed results in catastrophe (Enron) but long term 'greed' results in smart investment and longitudinal thought.

All that being said, I do agree that there should not be uninsured people medically. I'm willing to give up some more of my income for that, and I don't think it all has to come from Bill Gates, just because he's rich.

Are you aware that if you run a red light because it was stuck you are still breaking the law?

The ones that are denied visas are denied for a reason -- like rules and laws.

First of all, native americans were conquered. Early americans were at war with them, and that's how our country and the western frontier became established. Like it or not, it's historical fact. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Wars

That's apples and oranges as far as I'm concerned.

Secondly, as the law reads now, if you are an illegal immigrant, you are breaking the law. Just by you being here makes you a criminal. Maybe you agree with that law, maybe you don't, but as the law reads now, that's the way it is.

I'm a British Subject that immigrated to the USA the correct way. To do so (without immediate family in the US) required that I was educated (to 4 year college level) and had gainful employment. It took me about 30 months and about $1000 (in 1988 dollars) to get all my papers in order. And that wasn't a 'Green Card'. That was just a work visa that allowed me to stay LEGALLY.

I have a Green Card now - I qualified for one after 5 years of working hard, contributing to society and paying taxes, SS etc.

I ticks me off that I could have just walked over the border and simply decided not to go back.
