Either buy something where they are registered and have it shipped or cash or check.

^ Here is what he meant: usually when couples get married they register at a store or stores and pick what they want/need. Their guests can then go to those sites/stores and buy from that list and have it shipped either directly to the couple or to their own home and later on give it to the couple.

In my opinion you should get them some china or silverware. I got my friends a set of china and they loved it. It was one of the items they registered and they use it every day. So either pick something from their list or buy something practical.

Ask if they are "registered anywhere." That means they go to a store and compile a list of gifts they want so that people don't have to guess or get them things they don't want. Most stores have websites where you can order through and tey will ship the gift to them. If you have it sent, you don't have to worry about dragging a gift to the wedding.

I appreciated cash more than anything, but that's because I had to pay for a large chunk of the wedding myself. My wife and I were living together for 4 years prior so we had most of the stuff we needed.

Yeah for sure- cash is always appreciated as it helps pay for the wedding.

They might not be Asians so it doesn't have to be in a red envelop.

Asians give a lot of cash. I didn't invite enough Asians to my wedding.

HA! Funny statement.

Not sure the rule of thumb for the amount of your gift but I always try to base it on the amount it cost them to pay for my place setting at dinner. If it's family or close friends, my minimum for the present (usually cash and I'm Asian ) is $100.

Check here to see if they're registered http://www.weddingchannel.com/
Most people use this website.

I think $50 per person is standard. I had a plated dinner with premium open bar and my wife's family and friends were giving $25-50 per couple. I was so fucking insulted.

Chinatown weddings are usually cheaper so I usually give $75. Otherwise, it is $100 per person. But then again, I'm asian too. =)

That's garbage!! Cheap bastards, especially they were a couple. I only give a $100 minimum if it's immediate family or a really close friend.

If my wife and I go to a wedding, we'll buy a gift and give $100.

Shame on you!

OP, to be safe no lower than $50 but I would give $100. That should cover your dinner and drinks (if the couple is supplying an open bar). You don't wanna look cheap. BTW, weddings are always a good time!!! One big party!

Apparently some people didn't care. We got shit for cash. more than 50% of our cash came from 10 people on my side. We had 175 people.
