A sample is chosen to be representative of an entire population. I don't remember much cuz stats was such a joke of a class, but yeah.

It just means that are the people that were chosen in that population enough to represent them. For example, a number of people (sample) are chosen within the population of BMW drivers and they all drive 3 series. Is that sample accurate enough to represent the entire population? Does it mean that all BMW drivers own 3 series?

As in... do the people polled (the sample) represent the population as a whole (the entire US voting population)?

For instance, if there's a poll on sony.aol.com (my IE start page) asking who we're going to vote for, then the sample really only represents people who are probably aged between 20-30 (who else has a sony.aol start page and would actually click on the little flash poll). If the sony.aol site has a different poll from the rest of the aol network, then you're narrowing it down even further to people that overpay for things. You see? The sample (the people being polled) doesn't really represent the population (everyone).

The true way to know if a sample is representative of a population is if everyone in the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample. In other words an online poll about the whole US population wouldn't not have a good sample because not everyone has access to internet and therefore not an equal chance of being included in the sample. Also of course the sample must be random.
